Quarterbacks Coach Sean Gleeson has reportedly spurned a colossal $12 million offer from the Arkansas Razorbacks

COLUMBIA, MO – June 13, 2025 – In a significant display of loyalty and commitment, Missouri Tigers Quarterbacks Coach Sean Gleeson has reportedly spurned a colossal $12 million offer from the Arkansas Razorbacks, opting instead to remain with Head Coach Eliah Drinkwitz’s staff in Columbia. This stunning decision underscores the growing importance of elite coaching talent in college football and highlights the contrasting trajectories of the two SEC programs.

The audacious eight-figure offer from Fayetteville speaks volumes about the Arkansas Razorbacks’ determination to revitalize their offense. After a challenging 2024 season that saw the Razorbacks finish with a 6-7 record, including a bowl win, there’s a clear mandate for offensive improvement. Head Coach Sam Pittman, while securing a bowl appearance, is keen to inject new life and consistency into the Razorbacks’ attack, and the reported pursuit of Gleeson indicates their willingness to invest heavily in a top-tier offensive mind.

Sean Gleeson, known for his innovative offensive schemes and a track record of developing dynamic quarterbacks, officially joined the Missouri Tigers as Quarterbacks Coach in July 2024, after serving as an analyst for the Tigers and Northwestern in 2023. His coaching journey has seen him rapidly ascend through the ranks. Before his move to Missouri, Gleeson made a name for himself as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma State (2019) and Rutgers (2020-2022). His tenure at Princeton (2013-2018), where he also served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2017-2018, was particularly notable. During his time at Princeton, he oversaw an offense that led the FCS in scoring and ranked among the national leaders in total offense, developing Ivy League Offensive Players of the Year Chad Kanoff and John Lovett.

Gleeson’s coaching philosophy is often described as high-octane and adaptable. He’s known for tailoring his offensive approach to the strengths of his personnel, creating schemes that are explosive and challenging for defenses. This strategic flexibility and his proven ability to maximize quarterback performance undoubtedly made him a prime target for Arkansas, a program looking to ignite its passing game and overall offensive production.

For the Missouri Tigers, Gleeson’s decision to reject such a lucrative offer is a monumental win and a strong affirmation of the positive momentum within the program. Mizzou is coming off a successful 2024 season, finishing with a 10-3 record, including a bowl victory, and earned a No. 21 ranking in the early EA Sports College Football 26 team ratings. Retaining a coach of Gleeson’s caliber, particularly one who has been so instrumental in the development of their offensive game, is crucial as the Tigers look to build on their recent success and compete consistently in a highly competitive SEC.

“My focus is entirely on Mizzou,” Gleeson conveyed through a team spokesperson, choosing to let his actions speak louder than words regarding the reported offer. “I believe wholeheartedly in Coach Drinkwitz’s vision and the direction this program is heading. The players here are exceptional, and I am excited about the future we are building together in Columbia.”

The implications of this development are significant for both programs. For Arkansas, the quest for an offensive revitalization continues, underscoring the challenges of competing for elite coaching talent in the modern era of college football. The Razorbacks, under Coach Pittman, will need to recalibrate their strategy to find a coordinator who can ignite their attack and help them climb the SEC standings. The reported $12 million offer highlights the intense financial arms race for top coaching minds.

Conversely, Missouri solidifies its coaching staff with a rising star, ensuring continuity and continued development for its offensive unit, particularly at the quarterback position. Gleeson’s decision to remain, despite a massive financial incentive from a conference rival, speaks volumes about the culture, stability, and potential that the Missouri Tigers program currently offers. It’s a testament to the environment Head Coach Eliah Drinkwitz has cultivated in Columbia.

This high-stakes coaching drama serves as a potent reminder of the fiercely competitive nature of college football, where success often hinges not just on recruiting top players, but also on attracting and retaining the best coaching talent. Sean Gleeson’s choice marks a pivotal moment for both the Missouri Tigers, who gain invaluable continuity and momentum, and the Arkansas Razorbacks, who must now adjust their plans in the ongoing battle for SEC supremacy. The college football world will eagerly await the impact of this decision on the upcoming seasons.
