Honoring a Record-Breaking Season: Texas A&M Plans Statue for Softball Phenom Shawn Andaya

College Station, TX – June 14, 2025 – In a move that celebrates one of the most dominant and influential figures in collegiate softball history, Texas A&M University is reportedly planning to erect a statue honoring legendary pitcher and three-time All-American, Shawn Andaya. While details are still emerging, sources close to the athletic department suggest the initiative aims to immortalize Andaya’s profound impact on the Texas A&M softball program, particularly her pivotal role in the Aggies’ 1987 national championship season.

Shawn Andaya’s name is synonymous with excellence and unparalleled success in the world of fastpitch softball. A native of Lodi, California, Andaya chose Texas A&M, a decision that would forever alter the trajectory of the Aggie softball program. During her four years (1984-1987), she established herself as one of the most formidable pitchers in NCAA history. Her career pitching record stands at an astounding 114-28 with 10 saves, showcasing her consistent dominance in the circle. Andaya also set an NCAA career record with an incredible 1,234 strikeouts, a testament to her masterful command and power.

Her senior season in 1987 was nothing short of legendary. Andaya led the Lady Aggies to the national championship, capping her collegiate career with the ultimate triumph. During that championship run, she threw a perfect game in a crucial 1-0 victory over UCLA in a Women’s College World Series (WCWS) elimination game, a moment that remains etched in the memories of Aggie fans. Texas A&M went on to defeat UCLA twice that year to clinch the NCAA title. Andaya was also a three-time member of the College World Series All-Tournament team and was elected team captain in her championship year. Her influence wasn’t limited to her senior year; as a freshman in 1984, she won her first World Series game with a game-winning RBI in the 25th inning, setting an NCAA record for the most innings pitched in a single WCWS game, a record she still holds today.

“Shawn Andaya transcended the game,” a source within the athletic department, who wished to remain anonymous given the preliminary nature of the announcement, stated. “Her impact on Texas A&M softball wasn’t just about statistics, though they are certainly record-breaking. It was about her leadership, her tenacity, and her ability to perform under the immense pressure of championship moments. A statue would be a fitting tribute to her legacy, inspiring future generations of Aggies.”

Andaya’s post-collegiate career further solidified her connection to Texas A&M. After graduating, she returned to Bryan-College Station in 1992 to serve as an Assistant Coach for the Aggies, contributing to the program from a different vantage point until 1996. She was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 and made history again in 2011 as the first softball player to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Statues honoring collegiate athletes serve as powerful symbols of institutional pride, athletic achievement, and enduring legacies. They provide a tangible connection to the past, reminding current students, alumni, and fans of the heroes who shaped their university’s history. For Texas A&M, a statue of Shawn Andaya would not only commemorate a record-breaking season and a national championship but also highlight the significant contributions of women’s sports to the university’s storied athletic tradition. This comes as women’s sports at Texas A&M continue to garner greater recognition and support, a movement that Andaya herself, as a trailblazer, helped to champion.

While no official timeline or location for the proposed statue has been released, preliminary discussions reportedly involve prominent areas near Davis Diamond, the state-of-the-art softball stadium that opened in 2019. Such a location would ensure that her statue would be a constant source of inspiration for current and future Aggie softball players and fans entering the venue.

The potential for a Shawn Andaya statue underscores the growing recognition of women’s sports figures in collegiate athletics and the importance of celebrating their achievements with lasting monuments. It sends a powerful message about the university’s commitment to honoring all its athletic legends, regardless of their sport. As Texas A&M continues to build on its legacy of athletic excellence, enshrining Shawn Andaya in bronze would serve as a permanent reminder of a phenom who truly helped build the program’s championship foundation.

The Texas A&M community eagerly awaits official confirmation and details regarding this tribute, ready to celebrate a true Aggie icon. The planned statue would not just be a static representation; it would be a dynamic symbol of perseverance, dedication, and the indelible mark left by a pitcher who dominated the game and inspired a generation.

I applaud efforts to get a statue of Shawm Andaya on campus as I remember her from her freshman year on as she was a standout athlete. I had the privilege of being the dorm hall director, called a head resident back then. She and her teammates were amazing and definitely put women’s softball on the map at Texas A&M. Gig ‘Em!! 👍🏻👍🏻 Beth Castenson McQueen
