In preparation for their return to the Premier League, the Clarets have made the goalkeeper one of their main priorities this summer.
However, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, their Premier League rivals Brighton & Hove Albion will sign him before them.
When it was previously stated that Vincent Kompany’s team had an offer in the neighborhood of £13 million rejected, it has now been alleged that Roberto De Zerbi’s team is poised to complete a move for a rumored £17 million sum.
Despite their obvious love for the 20-year-old, the Clarets weren’t willing to engage in a bidding war.
For the Netherlands’ UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign, which begins this evening in Romania and Georgia, Verbruggen is presently preparing.
Verbruggen stated the following in an interview with the Belgian publication Het Belang van Limburg prior to the competition: “I have always said that it is my goal to play football in England. It’s an accomplishment in and of itself just because they mentioned me. However, I am concentrating on Hotel Oud London in Zeist at this time.
“I work with a lot of talented folks. They ask me the correct questions when they need to and are competent in what they do.
“But I only care about the things that I can control. And just now, the juniors’ European Championship is taking place.
Burnley reportedly plans to focus on Antwerp goalkeeper Jean Butez if they do not succeed in signing Verbruggen.
In 40 league games last year, the 28-year-old preserved 20 clean sheets, helping Antwerp win the title.
The Frenchman started his career at Lille before making a temporary loan move to Mouscron in 2017. He made a permanent move after making an impression there, then agreed to a €1 million transfer to Antwerp.
Arijanet Muric, the league’s top goalkeeper, faces an uncertain future because it seems Kompany is focused on improving his goalkeeping staff.
To add more competition, the Clarets are also anticipated to complete the acquisition of Lawrence Vigouroux, formerly of Leyton Orient.
