Georgia Bulldogs’ Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator, has reportedly turned down an astonishing $12 million offer

Athens, GA – In a stunning display of loyalty to his alma mater and the reigning powerhouse of college football, Mike Bobo, the Georgia Bulldogs’ Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator, has reportedly turned down an astonishing $12 million offer from the Auburn Tigers. The revelation, which has quickly ignited conversations across the SEC and the broader college football landscape, reaffirms Bobo’s deep roots in Athens and underscores the escalating battle for top coaching talent.

Bobo, a Georgia native who also played quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1994-1997, is in his second stint as offensive coordinator, having returned to the role in 2023. His deep understanding of the Georgia program, forged over years as a player and assistant coach (including a prior offensive coordinator tenure from 2007-2014), makes him an invaluable asset to Head Coach Kirby Smart’s staff. While his current salary is reportedly set to rise to $1.503 million on July 1, 2025, and $1.603 million in 2026, the $12 million offer from Auburn represents a colossal financial leap.

The reported $12 million from the Auburn Tigers is nothing short of unprecedented for a college football offensive coordinator. Current public records show Auburn’s offensive coordinator, Derrick Nix, making $800,000 per year. A $12 million offer would not only dwarf Nix’s salary but would put Bobo’s potential earnings in a realm rarely seen for assistant coaches, possibly indicating a multi-year deal with an astronomical annual average or significant bonuses tied to performance and retention. This aggressive pursuit highlights Auburn’s unwavering determination to elevate its offensive production and close the gap on SEC rivals, particularly with Georgia’s dominant recent run.

The Auburn Tigers, under Head Coach Hugh Freeze, are in the midst of rebuilding their program and fiercely competing in the brutally tough SEC West. Their desire to bring in a high-caliber offensive mind like Bobo, who has a proven track record of developing quarterbacks and leading potent offenses, speaks volumes about their ambition to quickly become a contender. Bobo’s familiarity with the SEC and his success at Georgia would have made him a prime target for a program looking for an immediate impact.

However, sources close to Mike Bobo indicate that his decision to stay with the Bulldogs was deeply personal and professional, extending far beyond the financial enticement. While any coach would consider a $12 million offer, several critical factors reportedly solidified his choice:

  • Deep Connection to Georgia: Bobo’s ties to the University of Georgia are generational. Having played quarterback there, coached there for many years, and now having his son, Drew Bobo, playing on the offensive line for the Bulldogs, his roots run incredibly deep. This personal connection to the program and the state is a powerful motivator.
  • Championship Culture and Stability: Under Kirby Smart, Georgia has built an undeniable championship culture, including two recent national titles. Bobo was part of the staff for the 2022 national championship as an offensive analyst before being promoted to OC. The stability of the program, the consistent success, and the clear path to competing for national championships year after year are highly attractive to any coach.

  • Comfort and Trust with Kirby Smart: Bobo and Smart were teammates at Georgia, and their professional relationship has been long-standing. This established trust and shared vision for the program provide a level of comfort and operational synergy that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
  • Talent Pipeline: Georgia consistently recruits top-tier talent, particularly at the quarterback and offensive skill positions. For an offensive coordinator, having access to an elite recruiting pipeline is a significant professional advantage and allows for the execution of complex and high-powered schemes.
  • Family Life: The disruption of moving a family, particularly when children are involved, can be a major factor in coaching decisions. Remaining in Athens provides stability and continuity for the Bobo family.

For the Georgia Bulldogs, Bobo’s decision to turn down such a colossal offer is an immense victory. It ensures continuity in their offensive leadership, particularly crucial as they navigate the evolving landscape of college football and continue their quest for national supremacy. Retaining a coach of Bobo’s experience and expertise, especially after being targeted with such an aggressive offer from a heated division rival, reinforces the strength and appeal of the Georgia program under Kirby Smart.

The trend of exorbitant salaries for top college football assistants shows no signs of slowing down, as programs battle fiercely for any competitive edge. Mike Bobo’s rejection of a $12 million offer from the Auburn Tigers is a vivid illustration of this new era of coaching compensation, but it also highlights that for some, the deep-seated ties, the established culture of winning, and the comfort of “home” can transcend even the most staggering financial incentives. The Georgia faithful can rest assured that their beloved offensive coordinator remains firmly in place, ready to lead the Bulldogs’ potent attack.
