Caitlin Clark Shares Competitive Childhood Memories in David Letterman Interview

Caitlin Clark, the star player for the Indiana Fever, is known for her fierce competitive spirit, which she says has been with her since childhood. In an upcoming interview with David Letterman, airing on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction on April 8, Clark opens up about how her drive to win even influenced her holiday traditions—especially when it came to trick-or-treating.

During the interview, Clark recalls running from house to house on Halloween in Des Moines, desperate to collect more candy than anyone else. “I was in a dead sprint under my costume because I had to have the most candy,” Clark shared in the interview preview. Her intense pursuit of the prize often meant leaving her father behind, which caused some problems. “My mom would get pissed at my Dad because it’s like, ‘Why’d you lose our daughter?’” she laughed, recalling how her father would sometimes find himself trailing behind as Clark raced ahead. Eventually, she would return home alone, much to her father’s concern.

Letterman followed up by asking if Clark still maintains that same level of competitiveness as an adult. While she jokingly remarked that she no longer participates in trick-or-treating, she did admit that her competitive nature extends beyond just candy hunts. Clark explained that even during holiday card games, her drive to win sometimes causes friction with her family. “Then everybody hates me by the end of the night, and I’m like, ‘Oh, great. I ruined Christmas!’” she said, reflecting on how her desire to win can lead to some tension during family get-togethers.

Clark’s candid reflections about her childhood and family dynamics provide a glimpse into the mindset that has driven her success as one of the most competitive players in the WNBA. Her ability to maintain focus and push herself toward victory is just as strong now as it was when she was racing to fill her Halloween bag with more candy than anyone else.

The full interview with David Letterman promises to offer more personal insights into Clark’s life, including how her childhood competitiveness shaped her journey to becoming one of the brightest stars in women’s basketball today. Fans of the Indiana Fever and basketball enthusiasts alike will want to tune in for this exciting episode.
