Following the club’s statement on the refereeing during Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle United, Arsenal Sporting Director Edu took to social media. The north London club were defeated 1-0 by Eddie Howe’s men at St. James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon scoring from close range.
However, the game was not without controversy, with VAR ruling on Gordon’s goal for three potential violations before it was awarded. After the final whistle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta launched into a rant against the refereeing in his post-match press conference.
Arsenal responded on Sunday with a statement in which they fully supported the Spaniard’s remarks. Now, Gunners transfer chief Edu has taken to Instagram, writing: “@arsenal (pointing emoji)”, alongside a picture of the statement, expressing his unambiguous support.
However, not everyone agreed with the statement from north London. Indeed, Manchester United legend Gary Neville expressed his displeasure on X (formerly known as Twitter), admitting that he isn’t a fan of clubs’ written letters.
“I played for a club where a manager went insane after games if we felt a decision had gone against us,” the former England international explained. You have the impression that it is us versus the world. I understand.
“Everyone despises us, the refs are out to screw us over, and their bias is against us.” However, I never recall the club writing letters criticizing the system or the entire refereeing community.
“When I look back, I don’t think as players we always covered ourselves in glory with refs, and at a big club, everyone feels entitled, and you have to leave and retire to see that.” Arsenal’s letter, as well as Liverpool’s statement a few weeks ago (they had a genuine bad one against them), are incorrect. Do it in private.
“If I were Howard Webb, I’d stop apologizing to them and just get on with it.” Managers and players make far more errors than officials!”
