Darwin Nunez, a Liverpool striker, is’really different’ according to Jurgen Klopp. The Uruguayan is unmistakable.
Darwin Nunez made headlines once more on Sunday, when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Luton Town. This time, however, it was not for a spectacular winner.
Instead, it was the inverse. The Uruguayan produced a stunning miss in the second half, with the flag only partially saving his blushes. It was essentially an open goal, but Nunez smashed it over the crossbar from three yards out.
Again, it didn’t really matter, but it was another example of how versatile the striker is. He can perform absolute magic that few players can, while also making Sunday-league mistakes.
Even without the miss, the game at Kenilworth Road was a letdown. Nunez, for example, was unlucky not to score in the first half after controlling a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and flicking it onto the crossbar.
That was one that could have flown in, but the luck just wasn’t with anyone except Luis Diaz. Even on his bad days, Jurgen Klopp believes Nunez demonstrated what sets him apart from the competition.
“The first chance he had was really well done, great pass, first touch top, and then he nails it on the crossbar,” Klopp said after the game in a press conference. “Obviously, the entire team was not in a goal-scoring mood today, which was not helpful.”
“But what distinguishes Darwin is that he is involved in almost everything.” We are at ease.”
Nunez’s true magic is in this. He’s always involved, causing havoc for defenses even when he forgets his shooting boots.
Liverpool benefits from it. Maybe it’s his speed pushing defenders back, or maybe it’s the attention he draws with his positioning. Nunez is more than just a goal threat in either case.
And if he can eliminate his bad misses, there’s little doubt that the 24-year-old would be one of the best strikers in the world.
