Mikel Arteta believes he couldn’t have done anything more to keep his Arsenal team in the FA Cup after they were dumped out by Liverpool.

A late own goal from Jakub Kiwior and a Luis Diaz strike earned the Reds a 2-0 third round win at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal had dominated the first half but failed to make the most of their openings with Alisson Becker rarely forced into serious action.

And Arteta explained in what way Liverpool are the best team in Europe as he defended his misfiring players.

“We didn’t take our chances,“ said the Arsenal boss. “I haven’t seen any other team in the first six months (of the season) generate as much as we have against Liverpool in the last two games, but we are not capitalising. The last few games, performance and merit wise there’s no questions.

“When my team plays with that attitude against probably the best team in Europe at the moment in terms of momentum, what can I do? I have to stick behind them and support them.

“It’s frustrating but what can we do. I can’t tell them to play bad and don’t shoot and Liverpool will score an own goal and we win the game. I don’t know how to create a gameplan like that, it’s impossible.”

There were a smattering of boos at the final whistle from the home support with Arsenal having now won only one of their last seven games, losing the last three.

But Arteta said: “The supporters are behind the team and in difficult moments they are incredibly good. They are important and supportive.

“It’s a difficult moment but if the team is getting hammered and not playing well and not deserving to win then I’d be much more worried. I am worried as we have to win more games and that’s a thing we have to change.

“(Our lack of goals) is probably affecting our confidence, especially today, more than it was against Fulham and West Ham. That’s why I think we need to reset. The break comes at a good time for us.”
