According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly battling it out for the right to sign Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen during the next transfer window.
The 20-year-old, who relocated to BayArena in 2020, has spent the past few years solidifying his place among Europe’s top young players.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that major European teams like the Blues and the Merseyside club have been considering recruiting the midfielder to bolster their engine room.
Liverpool and Chelsea reportedly displayed interest in signing Wirtz during the most recent transfer window, according to the TEAMtalk report. But a deal never happened because Leverkusen was determined to hang onto its top player.
Nevertheless, the source asserts that Liverpool and Chelsea haven’t given up on signing Wirtz and are still eager to use his services, even though they were unable to sign him the first time around.

TEAMtalk, however, claims that Leverkusen is looking for at least £87 million in order to trade their best player. In order to recruit Wirtz, Liverpool or Chelsea will need to make a significant investment.
According to the source, Chelsea and Liverpool may face off over this deal at the end of the current campaign, but they are unlikely to invest that much money to recruit the Leverkusen star in January.
But according to TEAMtalk, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also eager to get him, so whatever team wants to sign Wirtz would have to contend with fierce competition from their European rivals.
The aggressive midfield position is where the German like to play. In addition to being technically competent, he can generate opportunities for forward players by threading passes between the lines, has a keen eye for long-range passing, and puts in a lot of effort even when he is not in possession.
Therefore, if Chelsea or Liverpool sign him in the next transfer window, it would be a huge coup for both teams. If the Reds and Blues square off over this contract at the end of the current campaign, it will be intriguing to see who will ultimately be able to sign him.
