Liverpool have devised a strategy to ensure that Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk sign new contracts, FootballTransfers has learned.
We understand that the Reds are hoping to secure the long-term future of the club’s legends, even as they prepare for Mohamed Salah’s possible departure to the Saudi Pro League in 2024.
Salah was the subject of a world-record bid from Al-Ittihad near the end of the previous transfer window, but their bid of £150 million was turned down. Liverpool, bracing for his possible departure, wants Klopp and Van Dijk to commit to their futures so they can begin to plan an assault to end Manchester City’s dominance.
Liverpool finished fifth last season, while Manchester City won four of the last five Premier League titles. The club has now set their sights on dethroning Pep Guardiola’s men in the coming years, and they believe that extending the contracts of Klopp and Van Dijk will be critical in doing so.
When does Klopp’s contract expire?
Klopp’s future is crucial because Liverpool are willing to give him money from a potential Salah deal as well as a sizable sum for summer signings.
Van Dijk’s contract expires in 2025, and Liverpool hopes to extend it in light of his recent form. According to our sources, the Dutchman could take on a coaching role in the future.
Klopp’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire in the summer of 2026, with the club announcing in April last year that he would stay for another two years.
It was his third contract extension since joining the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.
The German is regarded as one of the club’s greatest coaches, having led them to their most successful period in Premier League history.
