Tottenham’s chances of winning the title were cast into doubt after they suffered their second loss in a row at Wolves. Liverpool must take care to avoid doing the same to Brentford.
Liverpool is more aware than most of the harm that losing early in the season can do to your hopes of winning the championship. The Reds have trailed Manchester City by only one point at the top of the Premier League table twice in the past few years.
Tottenham’s title challenge appears to have finished before it ever started, as they have failed to win in their last two games despite leading early. Even before today’s loss at Wolves, some had written them off due to one significant injury in particular.
James Maddison was pulled off during Spurs’ 4-1 loss to Chelsea, and it now appears that he won’t be back until the New Year. His impact has been like way ever since According to Goal, there are hints that Tottenham’s high goals may come to an end if he doesn’t sign.
It’s difficult to argue against that following Wolves earlier, where they had led for nearly ninety minutes before conceding twice in stoppage time. After all, after a close victory over Luton earlier in the season, Maddison himself hinted that might make the difference.
“This is equivalent to winning three points at home against United and Liverpool,” Maddison remarked (via the Mirror). It’s equally crucial. I thought the boys’ character was fantastic.
“A season consists of 38 games, and not all of them are attractive, goal-scoring, free-flowing, ‘AngeBall’ affairs. Sometimes you have to put in a lot of effort and demonstrate your tenacity and resolve. Top teams are frequently asked if they have a darker side. All of the best teams do, and we wish to lead their team. I’m glad we demonstrated that.
Sadly, the Spurs failed to demonstrate that at Molineux. Brennan Johnson gave them the lead in the third minute, but they were unable to consolidate their lead and eventually left North London empty-handed.
Naturally, Micky van de Ven will also be absent for a considerable amount of time, making Maddison not the only major loss for them. However, as Maddison portrays them, the big clubs are resilient enough to overcome those kinds of losses. This season, Liverpool has already proven it can.
In the same stadium where Spurs failed today, the Reds prevailed 3-1 two months ago because to their tenacity and willpower. That was in spite of having to start Jarell Quansah in the middle of the defense for his whole debut and missing both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.
But they’ll have to show themselves once more tomorrow. Due to his suspension against Brentford, Jürgen Klopp must find a replacement for the Argentine in the defensive midfield position.
But Liverpool has triumphed over almost all challenges thus far this season. Even in that contentious match against Tottenham, where they were reduced to nine men, the Reds were inches away from earning a point. That is still their only Premier League loss.
According to Maddison’s own description, Liverpool would undoubtedly have to be regarded as a top team this season if they can get past another issue tomorrow. Perhaps the Reds will be prepared for another title challenge, unlike Tottenham.
