Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder for Liverpool, was expected to play a significant role for the Reds this season.
Thiago has been in the news this week, with Jurgen Klopp confirming that the Spaniard will not be fit until the New Year. It is the latest chapter in Thiago’s frustrating two years at Liverpool.
However, according to a report published today by the Liverpool ECHO, the 32-year-old expected things to be very different in 2023/24.
They claim that despite receiving offers to leave the Reds for Saudi Arabia this summer, he chose to stay. Thiago is said to have made that decision because he believed he had a “significant” role to play for Liverpool this season.
So far, that hasn’t been the case. It remains to be seen whether this changes once the Reds’ No.6 is fit again.
Thiago is still waiting for a role at Liverpool.
Thiago would have likely played a decent role if he had been fit and ready for the start of the season.
He may not have started every week, but the former Barcelona man has a role to play.
On paper, some might argue that Thiago is still Liverpool’s most talented midfielder.
Dominik Szoboszlai and possibly Alexis Mac Allister have now challenged that. However, based solely on technical characteristics, we believe Thiago comes out on top. Klopp only called him ‘exceptional’ yesterday, and he is.
As a result, we believe that once the veteran is fit, he will come in and contribute. We just hope he’ll be able to do so.
Thiago’s Liverpool career would be disappointing if, with his contract expiring in the summer, he faded away without making an impact.
Knowing the Spaniard’s desire to win, he will be disappointed with how things have gone at Anfield. He hasn’t had a bad Reds career by any means, winning two domestic cups and being named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2021/22.
Nonetheless, he’ll be aware that he could have done more. That could be one of the reasons he turned down a lucrative job offer this summer. He still has something to prove.
Let’s hope Thiago’s prediction about his position in the team this season comes true. Fingers crossed that his frustration is almost over.
