After competing in the Carabao Cup fourth round in midweek, Newcastle United and Arsenal return to Premier League action at St James’ Park this evening (kick-off 5:30pm).
And both teams were experiencing opposing emotions. Manchester United were eliminated from the competition after the Magpies won only their second game at Old Trafford since 1972. Meanwhile, Arsenal were defeated 3-1 at West Ham United.
However, there is a small gap between the two clubs in the Premier League. The Gunners are resuming their title challenge and know that a win at St James’ Park will return them to the top of the table.
“It speaks for itself what they achieved (last season),” said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “They recruited really well in the summer. I think they have moved on from last year, mentally moved on and stepped it up.
“They are unbeaten, (and) it is a really big test of our credentials. We are going to have to find ways to make it very difficult for them but we are looking forward to the game.”
But by the same token, a win for Newcastle will see Howe’s men keep track on the top four and move four points behind their visitors.
Here’s the early team news from both camps – with Newcastle without eight players and Arsenal missing four:
