Pep Guardiola and Darwin Nunez in heated exchange after Man City vs Liverpool FC

The Liverpool striker had to be pulled away from the argument with the Manchester City manager by Jurgen Klopp at the final whistle

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez appeared to get into a heated argument as the final whistle blew for their fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp could be seen pulling Nunez – who had been substituted later on in the Premier League clash – away from the confrontation, and the manager had his hand to Nunez’s mouth at one point. Several coaches from both clubs became involved as they tried to calm the situation down.

It’s not clear what triggered the flashpoint, and the two managers attempted to play down the incident in the post-match press conferences this afternoon.

Guardiola in his post-match comments to Sky didn’t reference the incident, instead saying: “Excellent performance so after eight years, we’re still playing against a top, incredible team and the way we played again was excellent.

We were really, really good in our build-up, it was patient, we allowed ourselves to make the right decision a lot.

“Yes, sometimes we missed the last pass or last shot but we had deflections and typical things so I think it’s a big compliment to the way we work.”

The top two sides in the table played out a tense 1-1 draw. Erling Haaland’s first-half goal saw him break the record for the quickest player to reach 50 Premier League goals, but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late equaliser saw the spoils shared.
