Jayson Tatum Described the Celtics’ Ugly Loss to the Clippers Postgame
The Los Angeles Clippers had TD Garden booing for an abundance of Saturday night, destroying the Boston Celtics for their second home loss, 115-96.
Los Angeles was up nearly 40 in the third quarter, with the Clippers remaining red-hot.
Boston’s starters outside of Jayson Tatum shot 5-37, as he and Luke Kornet seemed to be the only two Celtics providing energy on both ends.
Tatum had 21 points and 11 rebounds on 8-18 shooting to lead the Celtics off night of an unusual 36 percent from the field and 25 from distance.
Tatum spoke about it after the blowout defeat.
“We felt like we were getting good looks, and we just didn’t really shoot the ball well,” Tatum said.
“Some of our possessions could have been better, but it was just a tough night for us.”
The Celtics were allowing the Clippers to get out and run on the break and get to their spots at their best, let alone the run-outs they gave up.
“Unfortunately, we kind of let our offense affect our defense, and they got a lot of leakouts and easy ones in transition.”
Home losses have been so uncommon for Boston for a long time now. The 19-point loss to the Clippers was their largest regular season loss at TD Garden since Nov. 24, 2021, per Celtics’ senior writer, Taylor Snow.
The C’s were routed 123–104 by the Kevin Durant and James Harden-led Brooklyn Nets.
It does not get any easier for the Celtics, as they now enter a week filled with a back-to-back with the New Orleans Pelicans and Indiana Pacers, as well as the Los Angeles Lakers making their trip to Boston.

Jrue Holiday gives candid take on Celtics blowout loss to Clippers
BOSTON — The Celtics suffered one of their ugliest losses of the year Saturday night, taking it on the chin against the Clippers in a 115-96 defeat.
No Boston starter played in the fourth quarter as the Clippers built a 31-point lead after three frames, putting on a clinic against a Boston team that was overmatched particularly in the third quarter during a 21-0 Clippers run.
While it was Boston’s only the second home loss of the year at TD Garden, the beatdown left a mark with Jrue Holiday.
“A good old-fashioned a**-whooping,” Holiday said after the loss.
“Definitely humbling, I think, to be able to kind of come home and get your butt kicked. But we know it’s a long season.
We know we can learn from this and just kind of hold it in our back pocket. It’ll always be in the back of our head when we have a good game the game before.”
Holiday was one of several Celtics starters who struggled offensively in the defeat, scoring just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting over his 27 minutes before sitting out the entire fourth quarter.
Boston’s starting five shot a collective 13-of-55 from the field, digging a hole the team had no hope of climbing out of in the second half with their offensive output.
Those misses may have led to defensive breakdowns, according to the veteran.
“I think after some of those shots, I don’t think it’s about effort,” Holiday said. “I think we went out there and tried to rebound, get offensive rebounds.
But I think they got a lot of transition points, a lot of leak-out where maybe we just weren’t concentrating on getting back defensively. They played well. Hats off to them.”
The loss coming on the heels of Boston’s most impressive offensive win of the year in Miami provided some valuable perspective for Joe Mazzulla as Boston tries to maintain consistency amid a seven-game homestand.
“You’re never as good as you think you are, you’re never as bad as you think you are,” Mazzulla said. “And I think it’s important.
We always talk about adversity, and adversity is always looked at as something negative happens to you. But to me, one of the hardest things to do is win consistently, all the time, and handle success.
And that’s just as hard as handling losing, is being able to handle success. So I think regardless, you just focus on the character of your team, and our guys will bounce back.”
The Celtics will get their next chance to bounce back on Monday night when they host Zion Williamson and the Pelicans at TD Garden.
