It may not have been a defeat, but Liverpool will no doubt be hurting after the goalless draw with Manchester United.

A lackluster performance from the Reds saw them unable to break through a stubborn United resistance, with the visitors offering little themselves in a poor game at Anfield. The frustration was clear to hear from the fans inside the ground.

The failure to beat its old rival means Liverpool missed the chance to move back to the top of the Premier League table. Arsenal had earlier reclaimed the lead after seeing off Brighton.

The Reds will still have the chance to claim top spot at Christmas though, with a big week on the way. After a Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham in midweek, Arsenal visit Anfield in a clash between the top two.

One thing’s for certain though, Liverpool needs to improve on its showing today if it’s to stand a chance against the Gunners. Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the other big sides in the Premier League and around Europe to take a look at the news going on at the other clubs.

Erik ten Hag hits back at Virgil van Dijk

Erik ten Hag has hit back at Virgil van Dijk’s claim that only Liverpool tried to win against Manchester United. The former Ajax boss insisted his side had the best chances at Anfield.

Van Dijk claimed after the goalless draw at Anfield “there was only one team I think that were trying to win the game”, having been left frustrated by a United side that has been in poor form recently.

“It’s his opinion,” Ten Hag in response (via the Manchester Evening News). “We should have taken more of the ball regains three or four passes in where we are capable of and then we could have even hurt the opponent even more.

“But all over in the end, you have to conclude, we had the best chances from open play for Rasmus Højlund and Garnacho.”

Liverpool.com says: In the end, United probably did have the best chances in the game, although it says a lot about them that they didn’t take either. Liverpool allowed itself to be dragged down to its opponent’s level, and in the end there’s only one side who will be happy with the point, and it’s not the Reds.

Roberto De Zerbi claims Arsenal is ‘best in the Premier League’

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has claimed Arsenal could be the best team in the Premier League this season, following his side’s defeat at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners won 2-0 to move back to the top of the table, leapfrogging Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side had much the better of the game, leaving De Zerbi with no complaints about the scoreline. “I think Arsenal are one of the best, maybe this season the best team in the Premier League. We are not used to suffering in this way. We are used to controlling the game,” the Brighton boss said afterward (via the Mirror).

Liverpool.com says: Arsenal was very impressive against Brighton, and you can’t really argue with De Zerbi’s assessment after Liverpool’s recent performances. The Reds need to bounce back next weekend against the Gunners, or else a title challenge looks unlikely to come to fruition.

Jurgen Klopp admits “horrendous” Liverpool fear as Ryan Gravenberch suffers injury blow

Liverpool laboured to a goalless draw with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, with the Reds losing another midfielder to injury in the second half

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool are straining under their “horrendous” schedule as the Reds lost Ryan Gravenberch to a hamstring injury in their goalless draw with Manchester United.

Dutch midfielder Gravenberch was arguably the Reds’ best player in his hour on the pitch on Sunday afternoon, with his direct running from midfield threatening to cause the visitors problems only for the hosts to be let down by a lack of calmness in front of goal.

The former Ajax star had been a target for United in the summer, but he showed his former manager Erik ten Hag what he was missing in a strong display before he pulled up and had to be replaced by compatriot Cody Gakpo.

Discussing Gravenberch’s injury after the match, Klopp said: “We will see. They told me directly after the game it got worse during the game, so that means it was not ‘bam’. He felt a little bit and didn’t show immediately. We hoped it would go by, [but] it didn’t. There was this really intense sprint with the ball which ended on the 18-yard line with a collision.

“I hope it is not that serious but we have in the next 10 days three more games, so I don’t know if he will be part of them or one of them. We will see, we have to make a scan.”

Gravenberch’s injury comes as Liverpool are missing Alexis Mac Allister to a blow sustained during the win at Sheffield United earlier this month, while Thiago Alcantara hasn’t yet kicked a ball this season and Stefan Bajcetic had only been seen fleetingly in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Gravenberch is almost certain to miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham at Anfield, with the Reds then facing a crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal, who moved above them in the table on Sunday, next weekend.

“It’s a tough period. We play Wednesday against West Ham, they’re flying and playing really well at the moment, then we have Arsenal and Burnley. It’s horrendous,” said Klopp after the match.

“We have to make sure we get enough points in this period but then there’s a lot of football to play after that too. It’s important we get through this with as many players as possible.”
