Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has praised Liverpool and several other of the teams that the Premier League champions have faced in recent weeks amid their winless run

Jack Grealish has played down talk of a crisis at Manchester City and instead paid tribute to the quality of the other teams in and around the Premier League summit.

The champions ended a four-match winless run on Sunday with a 2-1 win against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road but have fallen down the table in recent weeks. City are currently fourth and four points behind Liverpool, who ended the weekend as league leaders.

Grealish scored the winner against Luton, who had taken a shock lead into the break. And speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Grealish had a very simple explanation for City’s current league position: their rivals are simply “very good” teams.

“I think a lot of people like to talk about City and go on like it’s a big crisis whereas in reality, we have played against very good teams,” Grealish said. “We have played Spurs, who have been unbelievable. Liverpool who are top of the league.

“And then we have played Chelsea and Aston Villa away, who have got one of the best home records in the whole of Europe so we have played brilliant teams. We lost one and drew three, so it’s not the end of the world but people like to pretend it is sometimes.”

While Grealish lauded plenty of teams, his comments on Liverpool are the most intriguing given the Reds have emerged as City’s most likely title rivals alongside Arsenal this year.

Pep Guardiola stressed before Sunday’s match, though, that more was expected of City than any other team in the Premier League. He said in a press conference: “The only team who is going to fail by not winning the Premier League is us. For the rest it’s a big success – any team. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea don’t win everything – but that’s normal.

“City should win. That isn’t fair. It’s difficult to handle every week, every three days, during years and years. (What we have done) is exceptional, but their positions are normal. Just look at our rivals, who want to win once, while for us it’s important to always be there – and we have to continue that.
