Tottenham: Daniel Levy will take into account “substantial” transfer bids for Son Heung-min as the Korean prepares to leave during the summer transfer window due to…

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would have to consider “substantial” offers for Son Heung-min this summer, if Spurs miss out on Champions League football, according to Alan Hutton.

The South Korean international has been in fine form under the management of Ange Postecoglou this season scoring 12 goals in the Premier League and laying on six assists for his teammates, despite missing the whole of January while at the Asian Cup.

However, the 31-year-old’s excellent form hasn’t been enough to fire Spurs into the Premier League’s top four, with Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Saturday (17 February) allowing Aston Villa to leapfrog Postecoglou’s side.

While a fifth-placed finish may be enough to secure Champions League football this season, Hutton thinks Son could follow Harry Kane and look to leave North London at the end of the campaign, especially if a big bid arrives.

“I would like to say that he would stay,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He has been a great servant to the club, but part of me thought the same about Kane, that he would never leave. Football is one of those strange things where you never know what could be around the corner.

“I think it would all come down to what team we are talking about and how big a bid it is. Depending on those factors, I know Daniel Levy would look at whatever, but if it’s a substantial amount they’re going to look at it.

“But can they replace him, can they reinvest the money? Tottenham fans won’t want to see him go, nobody will so it really boils down to those two things.”

Will Son Heung-min follow Harry Kane out of Tottenham in a summer transfer?

Levy and Tottenham never sell a player unless it benefits Spurs and that approach is unlikely to change this summer, even if Son were to push for a move away like Kane did at the end of last season in search of silverware.

However, should a big transfer fee land on Spurs’ door, Levy and those around him would simply have to consider it as the South Korean international isn’t getting any younger and time is running out for him to win silverware in his career.

Under Postecoglou, Spurs have added to their attacking talent well with the likes of Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner and they could do the same come the end of the season if Son were to depart North London in a big-money move.

Pundit urges Tottenham to leave ‘outstanding’ star Micky van de Ven out of Manchester United clash

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Alan Hutton believes Micky van de Ven’s return could be huge news for Tottenham Hotspur this season but has urged Spurs to not rush the Dutchman back into action.

The 22-year-old returned to Ange Postecoglou’s matchday squad for the FA Cup third-round clash with Burnley having not played for Spurs since sustaining a hamstring injury during the chaotic 4-1 defeat to Chelsea back in November.

While Van de Ven remained on the bench for the entirety of Tottenham’s 1-0 win, some have suggested he could be ready to start the Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday 14 January having had an extra week of training.

Postecoglou is short of options at the heart of the defence with Eric Dier completing his transfer to Bayern Munich, but Hutton has told the Spurs boss to remain cautious suggesting it would be best to not throw him into the deep end at Old Trafford.

“It’s huge, I thought he was outstanding,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He and Romero played really well together, they had that pace to get back in and I can understand why they’re not just throwing him back in because, with a hamstring injury and how he did it running at full pace, you don’t want to take the risk.

“Of course, he’s done the training and the strength work and everything, but there’s no need to just throw him.

“They’ll probably just look at his minutes and take it just week by week and see how he goes to get him back 100 per cent fit and raring to go for the second half of the season.”

While it remains to be seen whether or not Postecoglou will opt to start the Dutchman against Erik ten Hag’s side on Sunday, it is still a huge boost to Spurs that they can call upon the “outstanding” defender once again.
