The plans of Tampa Bay Rays’ for 2025 exposed

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed his hope for a clear plan regarding the Tampa Bay Rays’ temporary location for the 2025 season by Christmas. After severe damage to Tropicana Field from Hurricane Milton, the Rays need a temporary home while the stadium undergoes repairs, with some parts needing complete reconstruction. The stadium is expected to reopen only by 2028, coinciding with the anticipated opening of a new $1.3 billion facility in St. Petersburg, which will replace Tropicana Field as part of a large downtown project.

Commissioner Rob Manfred: MLB will continue focus on fan safety

While various locations, including spring training sites around Tampa Bay, have been suggested as temporary venues, Manfred and local officials are focused on finding a place within the Rays’ home market to minimize disruption. Nearby options include facilities used by the Yankees, Phillies, Blue Jays, and Pirates. However, these sites may pose scheduling challenges, especially as they are typically spring training facilities and not designed for regular-season MLB games. As an alternative, some have suggested a temporary arrangement at loanDepot Park in Miami, though logistical issues make this less ideal.

Despite the uncertainty, Manfred assured fans that the Rays will have a place to play in 2025 and remain anchored in Tampa Bay until they can return to their home stadium. The commissioner’s goal is to finalize a decision before the holiday season, ensuring stability for both the team and its fanbase while Tropicana Field is restored.
