So impressive as Liverpool defender is outperforming some of the Premier League’s best attackers when it truly matters

The hero of Liverpool has an incredible record in crucial matches.

Since joining the team in the 2017–18 campaign, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of Liverpool’s greatest players, but you might not be aware of his outstanding performance in pivotal moments.

Big games are those against his team as well as Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United, together known as the “top six.”

He is undoubtedly one of the players that can make a lasting impression on those big league games, which are only attended by the greatest.

That was evident in the 1-1 draw with City over the weekend; his brilliant low strike gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a great point away at the reigning champions and it took him to 22 goal contributions against the top six sides.

Let’s just remind ourselves of his position, the numbers he has produced in an attacking capacity as a full-back is truly unique and he has had plenty of starring moments to go with the one at the Etihad.

What makes it even better is the fact that some of the league’s best attackers can’t boast better or even the same numbers. For example, Bukayo Saka (20) Phil Foden (18) Gabriel Jesus (19) and Jack Grealish (18) all fall short which further emphasises his level of performance.

Over the previous five seasons, he has averaged 11 assists per game in the league. In the 2019–20 and 2021–22 seasons, he finished second in the playmaker award, and in the 2018–19 season, he finished third behind Ryan Fraser and Eden Hazard.

He is as good as the finest strikers and playmakers on paper, and even if his defensive flaws are scrutinized more than any other, he regularly produces on the other end.

Examples like “dribbled past” on the defensive statistics were unjustified over the weekend; he was allegedly defeated seven times by City, but additional video from the match indicates that he was only really defeated twice. This means that the statistics that circulate on social media are frequently inaccurate, and the criticism that follows is unjustified.

Alexander-Arnold hasn’t needed to be at his best for Liverpool to succeed this season because the front five players are flourishing and scoring goals frequently. The acquisition of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch has also helped to bring more of a creative viewpoint.

Even while his numbers aren’t as outrageous as they once were, he still ranks as their greatest passer and creator. The team’s current great run and form are what matter most, and if he can consistently find his form, regardless of the opponent, it will elevate the squad to a new level.
