Jarell Quansah was named Liverpool’s Man of the Match in last night’s Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth by Jurgen Klopp.
On only his fourth appearance for the Reds, Quansah was outstanding. The 20-year-old stood firm in stormy conditions on the South Coast.
It’s the type of performance we’ve come to expect from Quansah. And, speaking to LFCTV after the game, Klopp emphasized how highly he regarded the centre-back’s performance.
“Was there a Man of the Match tonight or don’t we have that?” asked Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. “He was my Man of the Match,” the reporter responded.
“Mine as well,” Klopp added. “Wow, that was a really good game. He loved it, I told him, and he was ecstatic about the game. Concentrated, strong in tackles, and excellent game reading.
“We gave him a lot of ball, he had to do a lot with the ball, Caoimh [Kelleher] was like ‘give it to him, let’s see what he can do.'” But they [Bournemouth] are also good, with one or two difficult situations, which is normal. Very, very good game.”
Quansah shines once more.
Although he has only played seven games for Liverpool, big things are expected of young Quansah.
The youngster has faced challenges before, such as a difficult away game at Wolves on his first Premier League start. His first minutes away at St James Park were no picnic either.
But, with the wind howling and the rain pouring, this was Quansah’s most difficult assignment yet.
But, in typical cool fashion, the centre-back never looked troubled at Dean Court.
Joel Matip, who expertly guided his far younger teammate through the game, deserves a special mention as well.
Caoimhin Kelleher also had a good game, despite perhaps giving his defenders too much ball under pressure.
But it was Quansah who stole the show. It’s fantastic to see the academy graduate shine after so many calls for Liverpool to sign a centre-back this summer.
The next challenge is to keep working and not let this kind of recognition get to his head. If Jarell can keep his feet on the ground, the sky is the limit.
