Burnley are ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, who has previously been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Fulham.
The Norway international was one of the Blades’ most important players in a successful 2022/23 campaign which saw them promoted back into the Premier League.
Berge signed for Sheffield Utd in January 2020. He has since made 109 appearances, scoring 15 goals and 12 assists. 29 of these appearances came in the Premier
League, so he has plenty of experience at the highest level.
Despite his importance to the team, it seems Paul Heckingbottom has been forced into selling him this summer. That is because he has just 12 months remaining on
his current contract.
The team who will take advantage of Berge’s situation are Burnley, who could be battling Sheffield Utd to survive relegation this season.
Now, according to reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Burnley are close to reaching a ‘verbal agreement’ with Sheffield Utd for Berge.
“Burnley are closing in on deal to sign Sander Berge from Sheffield United — verbal agreement almost completed between clubs,” Romano wrote on Twitter.
“Sources guarantee medical could take place already today.”
As previously reported by Football365, Liverpool, Chelsea and Fulham have all considered moves for Berge in the past, so there is no doubt he is a
quality player.
With that in mind, it will be a major coup if Burnley do complete a deal for the Norwegian centre-mid, as expected.
It’s fair to say Vincent Kompany has overseen some savvy business already this summer as he looks to prepare his squad for Premier League football.
The Lancashire club have already brought in nine new players, adding some much-needed depth to their squad.
Sheffield Utd, on the other hand, have arguably lost their best player already. Illiman Ndiaye netted 14 goals and made 11 assists in 46 Championship appearances
for the Blades last season. This gave him an impressive average of 0.54 goal contributions per game.
The Senegal international signed for Marseille last week, so Heckingbottom has a major void in his squad to deal with.
With Berge now on the way out, their squad is arguably worse now than it was at the start of last season. Now, they have just a few weeks to bring in some much-
needed reinforcements, otherwise they seem destined for a relegation battle.
