Emma Raducanu sadly won’t be able to compete at this week’s WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing after contracting a foot injury in Seoul last week.
On Saturday, the Briton was playing her fifth WTA quarterfinal of the year and hoping to make her second semifinal. But early in the match, she appeared to be struggling with her movement – and after she took a medical timeout but still lost the opening set 1-6 to No. 1 seed Daria Kasatkina – she walked to the Russian and shook her hand.
Instantly, it raised concerns that Raducanu may be forced to miss the China Open. And unfortunately, exactly that has happened as the 21-year-old will have to wait for at least another year to make her debut in Beijing.
Previously, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina also pulled out of the China Open.
Raducanu’s plans for the Asian swing have already been derailed
After appearing in just two hard-court tournaments during the summer, the 54th-ranked Briton was targeting to have a fully-stacked schedule in Asia.
“I always knew there was a really long block in Asia at the end of the year and I didn’t want to overdo myself in the first half of the year… I have to prioritize and Asia was one of those for me. So I stacked the year on the backend heavy, because I’m excited. I thrive in Asia. It’s where I truly feel like home. So I’m buzzing for that trip even though it’s at the end of the year. I’m looking forward to going out there and trying to take it,” Raducanu told WTA Insider in Seoul.
But now instead of taking part in a WTA 1000 tournament, the 21-year-old has to think about how she can quickly and successfully recover from her ongoing foot issue.
It remains to be seen if Raducanu can recover for the Wuhan Open, which starts on October 7th.

A dramatic family mourning strikes Jannik Sinner
Margith Rauchegger, the beloved aunt of Jannik Sinner for whom the young Italian had shared a splendid dedication during the on-court interview following his triumph at the US Open has died. On Saturday, the sister of the young Italian’s mother passed away after a bad disease at just 56 years old.
Jannik Sinner’s aunt has passed away at the age of 56.
2 weeks ago, he dedicated his USO title to her in his victory speech:
“I want to dedicate this title to my aunt because she is not well and I don’t know how long she will be in my life.”

As I wrote above, the Italian had dedicated his recent victory at the US Open to her, with a moving speech, telling how important she was for him and his brother Mark, when their parents were forced to stay away from home for work.
“I love tennis, I train so much to experience moments like this, but these days I realized that there is a life outside the court too. I think about my aunt who is not well. She is a very important person to me with whom I have shared so many beautiful moments. I would really like to see her get better,” told the ATP No.1 during the award ceremony.
When asked later about the dedication to his aunt, he replied: “I never think beforehand about the speeches I could eventually make. In those things I am very instinctive. The dedication was spontaneous because, after the match, I realized all at once what I was going through. My aunt is important, I spent a lot of time with her in the summer when I was little. She took me to ski races when my parents were busy with work. Traveling so much, unfortunately I spend little time with the people I care about. And I’m sorry,” said a sincerely sorry Sinner.
In the meantime, Jannik landed in China to participate in two important tournaments, Beijing and then Shanghai. In the next few hours we will understand if this mourning will change his plans for the next few days.
