An excellently worked opening goal

38′ Tottenham 1-0 Liverpool

Wow.

Son applies the finishing touch into an open goal from a beautiful Tottenham attacking move.

Maddison plays a sublime pass into the feet of Richarlison on the left wing and he aims a first-time low cross into a really dangerous area.

Then it is about desire and Son is already on the move. He beats Matip in the foot race and makes it 1-0.

Offside flag denies Diaz the opening goal

34′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

The ball is in the net for Liverpool and it is a fantastic finish from Diaz after being played through by Salah. But, the offside flag denies the celebrations in the away end.

The replays show it is a really tight one but the assistant referee made the correct call in normal time.

A huge let off for 11-man Tottenham!

Red cards: A familiar recent theme for Liverpool

32′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

For the third time in seven league games this season Liverpool are reduced to 10 men.

I don’t think there was anything malicious in the challenge from Jones, but it was mistimed and he went over the ball and caught Bissouma. When the referee was sent to the screen, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

Alisson saves from Maddison

30′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

With the extra man, Tottenham have immediately grown back into the game.

Maddison — who hardly had a touch when it was 11 vs 11 — is playing a leading role. He cuts in from the right and aims a left-footed strike towards the top corner but Alisson saves and hold onto the effort.

Bissouma back on the pitch

28′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

As a consequence of the challenge, Bissouma had his ankle quite nastily turned.

After receiving treatment on the pitch, he is back on the pitch and back in midfield.

26′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

And it is a red card.

Liverpool are down to 10 men after the first dismissal of Jones’ Liverpool career.

The slow-motion replays make it look a really bad tackle, but it wasn’t in normal time.

That feels very harsh.

Jones shown first yellow card, but it could be red

25′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

For the first time in this game, the yellow card is out and it is for Jones.

He is late the ball and plants his right foot onto the ankle of Bissouma. A yellow card has been given, but there is a check for a red card.

Simon Hooper has been sent over to the monitor by his colleagues on VAR…

Salah fires over

22′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have been very good in the first quarter of this game and Salah is playing a key role.

He tries to bend an effort with the outside of the left foot from the edge of the penalty area but gets it all wrong and it flies harmlessly high and wide.

The Liverpool star demands a corner but a goal kick is given — the replays are inconclusive.

Sarr blocks Jones strike

20′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool build out from the back with brilliant efficiency yet again and another cross into the Tottenham penalty area deserves to have someone running onto it.

After beating everyone else the box, Jones gets to it in the attacking left-back position but his left-footed strike is deflected wide by the diving Sarr.

An end-to-end start

17′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Intriguing start.

In keeping with Liverpool’s season so far, they look such a threat going forward but also vulnerable at times out of possession. Klopp clearly not happy with the ease at which Spurs have played through them a couple of times.

That fine double save from Vicario to deny Gakpo and then Robertson all came from an excellent long pass from Szoboszlai to release Diaz down the left.

13′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

The brilliant start to this game continues.

Some slick passing from Liverpool ended with Gakpo being found in the penalty area but his first touch took him away from goal and his subsequent effort was straight at Vicario.

The Tottenham goalkeeper had to get back to his feet immediately to deny Robertson on the rebound, and he did before Spurs were able to clear the resulting corner.

Inviting Richarlison cross has no recipients

11′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

The first involvement of the game for Richarlison should have probably brought the opening goal.

Good work in the Tottenham midfield saw him picked out on the left and he sent a low cross through the heart of the Liverpool six-yard box. Alisson didn’t know whether to come or go, but Kulusevski couldn’t reach it at the far post.

Van Dijk blocks from Kulusevski

9′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

The first shot of the game for Tottenham is easily blocked by Van Dijk.

He perhaps shouldn’t have that chance given the quality of the counter attack but, after being picked out by Maddison and cutting in from the right wing, Kulusevski was unable to bend his effort around the Dutchman and towards the far corner.

Pressing from both sides

7′ Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Neither team are deviating from their manager’s plans.

At one end, Tottenham are pressed right back to their goal line before the home side do the same at the other end.

High risk
