Ruben Amorim Responds to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Criticism: “We’re Underperforming, But We Can Turn It Around…

In the wake of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s candid remarks about Manchester United’s underperforming squad, head coach Ruben Amorim has openly acknowledged the team’s struggles this season. Ratcliffe, the club’s co-owner, caused a stir earlier this week by bluntly stating that some players are “not good enough” and “probably overpaid.” Now, Amorim has responded, admitting that both he and the players are falling short of expectations—but emphasizing that change is on the horizon.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s pivotal Europa League clash against Real Sociedad on Thursday, Amorim reflected on Ratcliffe’s comments. “If we’re being honest, everyone, myself included, is underperforming this season,” Amorim said. “But we are fully aware of the issues, and we have the determination to turn this around.”

Ratcliffe’s criticism of United’s current squad comes amidst reports that the club plans a major overhaul this summer. The co-owner pointed to the need for a significant reshaping of the team, especially as they look to reassert themselves as contenders for major trophies.

“I think Sir Jim was being honest,” Amorim continued. “You look at players like Casemiro, who have won everything, and we know they’re capable of so much more. We understand the criticism, and our goal is not just to change his mind, but everyone’s. We’re working hard to show that we can deliver.”

While Ratcliffe’s assessment raised eyebrows, Amorim remains undeterred. He believes that with the right adjustments, the team can shift public perception and improve results. “Even if some think I’m not right for this club, I’m confident results will prove otherwise. We’re all in this together and the players are desperate to prove themselves.”

On the injury front, Amorim confirmed that Manchester United will be without key figures for the Real Sociedad tie. “Mason Mount is not ready yet, Leny [Yoro] is out, and unfortunately, Harry Maguire will miss this one too. But I hope to have him back for Sunday’s match,” he revealed. Despite these setbacks, Amorim remains hopeful that the team can bounce back and make a statement in Europe.

When asked about his relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Amorim didn’t mince words. “We are blunt and honest with each other,” he said. “That’s the way it should be. We both want the same thing: success for Manchester United.”

As United prepares to face Real Sociedad in their Europa League last-16 second leg, Amorim and his squad will have the perfect opportunity to prove that they can still turn their season around—and change both Ratcliffe’s and the fans’ minds in the process.
