Phil Collins, Legendary Genesis Drummer, Passes Away Following Health Struggles
Phil Collins, the iconic drummer and lead vocalist of Genesis, has passed away after a prolonged battle with health complications. Collins, 74, had been dealing with a series of debilitating conditions over the past few years, which ultimately led to his death. His struggles began with a series of medical issues, including severe nerve damage that caused a condition known as “drop foot,” which severely impacted his ability to walk and perform. His health declined further in the wake of several surgeries, with his ability to drum, once the hallmark of his musical career, deteriorating.
In a heartbreaking series of interviews over the last few years, Collins had spoken openly about his difficulties adjusting to life without drumming, a loss he described as a “shock.” He had retired from live performances in 2022, largely due to his inability to perform in the way he once had. Despite this, Collins remained involved in music, offering guidance on Genesis’ 2021 reunion tour and working on new material for his solo projects.
Born in London in 1951, Collins first rose to fame as the drummer for Genesis in the late 1960s and became their lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975. Under his leadership, Genesis achieved massive global success, particularly in the 1980s, with hit albums like Invisible Touch and Genesis. His solo career was equally successful, producing chart-topping hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds.”
Collins’ passing marks the end of an era in rock music. He will be remembered not only for his groundbreaking contributions to Genesis but also for his work as a solo artist, a trailblazer who left a profound impact on the world of
music.
