Pep Guardiola has discussed his long-term future at Manchester City and admitted he will consult with his family before signing a new deal.

The City boss sees his current deal tie him to the Etihad until the end of next season and those running things at the club are keen on him penning an extension sooner rather than later. Guardiola’s long-term title rival Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he will step down from his post as Liverpool boss come the end of the current campaign.

Everyone at the Etihad will be desperate to ensure Guardiola doesn’t follow his example, but the City boss has made clear he’ll assess his relationship with his players before weighing up whether he continues. Pressed for comment on the issue, he stopped short of confirming he’ll sign another deal.

“We have to see how players’ behaviour is, whether we are keeping our standards,” Guardiola told reporters. “Next year will be nine seasons, which is a lot of time. Extending after two years is not the same as extending after nine. We have a lot of time [to decide]. But now I feel really good.”

Since his appointment in 2016, Guardiola has signed three extensions, coming in 2018, 2020, and 2022. He went on to reveal that whenever the time comes to commit his future to City, the former Barcelona boss discusses the situation with his nearest and dearest.

“Normally when I decide to extend my contract, the decision is quick. I trust my feelings and instinct and my family is involved. Every time they [City] offer [a new deal], it does not take much time. When I feel it is OK, I feel good, they want me, then OK.”

Klopp’s cited a lack of energy as one of the reason’s he is calling time on his Liverpool career, but there is no such fear with Guardiola who has insisted he can now relax and unwind outside of football much better than his Barcelona days.

“I am a more [higher] quality manager now because I am better at selecting when to work and when to disconnect,” the City boss added.

“When I started in Barcelona I was [obsessed]. But now I can stay on the sofa watching TV and not think about football. That helps me because after that, I have more desire to reconnect.

“Before I was thinking all the time about if I was missing something or that I was not professional enough. I understand that was a mistake and it’s better to have quality in what you do.”
