Liverpool are confirmed to be in discussions with Colombian 20-year-old Kevin Mantilla.

In late December, Liverpool were said to be tracking the defender, as per a report from AS, and their interest has officially been confirmed by CA Talleres president, Andrés Fassi.

As quoted by La Voz, the 61-year-old said: “It’s true, they have been following him for four months now. And they asked us for information about his physical records.”

Who is Kevin Mantilla?

Mantilla is the latest defender to join Liverpool’s extensive transfer shortlist as Jurgen Klopp targets a new centre-back after Joel Matip’s ACL rupture.

The Cameroonian needs to be replaced, especially with this contract set to expire in less than six months, and Mantilla is now on the Reds’ transfer radar.

The centre-back is just 20 years old and stands at a whopping 1.91m (six foot three). From a physical point of view, Mantilla is well-equipped to deal with the Premier League’s intensity.

His contract with CA Talleres only expires on 31 December 2027 and is represented by the Alinea agency. They mostly represent Colombian players, including Anderson Arroyo and David Ospina.

Why are Liverpool interested?

As already mentioned, Liverpool need a replacement for Matip due to his injury and contract situation.

Stylistically, he is more than suited to Klopp’s style of play.

Much like Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Mantilla is an accomplished 1v1 tackler and is more than capable of stopping counter attacks on his own.

His tackling and interceptions stand out but his aerial presence is a major plus. Mantilla is also puts his massive frame to brilliant use, blocking crosses and shots like his life depends on it.

However, he does have a tendency to over-commit to risky challenges that he won’t get away with in the Premier League.

The step up to the English top flight is a difficult one to make but Liverpool never rush signings into the starting lineup unless they are ready.

Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo are perfect examples of this. The latter has finally found his feet at Anfield while Gravenberch is still raw and being eased into life in the Premier League.

When might Liverpool sign Mantilla?

This is only speculation but a deal for the summer could be arranged with CA Talleres.

Given he is relatively unknown and is playing in an obscure league, Liverpool could also be able to secure a bargain fee.

Of course, buying players without European experience is a risk but if there’s a coach that can get the best out of Mantilla, it’s Klopp.

Liverpool could reportedly sign Bruno Guimarães in the summer and they would only need to pay a third of his transfer fee up front.

This week has seen a multitude of reports linking Liverpool with a move to sign the Brazilian midfielder.

It’s a signing many supporters would love to see happen given the player’s obvious talent.

Yet, given Newcastle’s ambition, it will be a tricky deal to get over the line.

Pressure from the Premier League to meet their Profit and Sustainability rules means that the Magpies may have to sell key players to avoid sanctions.

This is the opportunity the Reds are seeking to take advantage of.

Liverpool only need to pay €38M upfront to sign Bruno Guimarães

According to to a report from Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool can now sign Bruno Guimarães in the summer.

The report claims that his contract, which expires on 30 June 2028, includes a prohibitive release clause worth “just over” €115 million (£100M). The agreement will allow him to leave if it’s activated.

Release clauses are usually paid in full upfront while transfer fees that are negotiated are typically amortised over an agreed number of years. What this means is that the fee is split into smaller, more affordable payments.

AS claims that “sources close to the operation” suggest Guimarães’ transfer fee could be amortised over three years worth €38 million (£32.6M).

This would make signing the 26-year-old much more affordable.

Liverpool’s summer approach to Newcastle to sign Guimarães

According to a report from GOAL Brazil published in late May 2023, Liverpool and Barcelona “opened talks” with Newcastle United and were “willing to try to sign Bruno Guimarães.”

Newcastle swiftly put interest to bed by negotiating a new contract with the midfielder, bumping his wage to £120,000 per week in October 2023.

After signing the deal, Guimarães said: “I’m absolutely delighted. The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life.”

With talk of a potential Liverpool move to sign Guimarães gaining more and more attention, what are Newcastle CEO Darren Eales and manager Eddie Howe’s stance on selling the midfielder?

Newcastle stance on selling Guimarães

Speaking to the press, CEO Eales was asked if the Premier League’s financial pressure placed on Newcastle will mean they have to sell some of their best players.

Eales replied: “It’s difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that, if we’re going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players.”

According to a report from the i, Eddie Howe and Newcastle will reject offers from Liverpool, PSG, Barcelona and Chelsea this month although a summer transfer remains possible.
