Michael Franti & Spearhead Announce Indefinite Hiatus Following Decades of Music and Activism

After more than three decades of music, activism, and uplifting global audiences, Michael Franti & Spearhead have announced an indefinite hiatus following the conclusion of their Welcome to the Family tour this fall.
In an emotional video statement shared on Franti’s social media, the frontman reflected on the journey: “This band has been my heart and soul for so long. We’ve traveled the world, shared joy, pain, and purpose through our music, and built a family with our fans. Now, it’s time for some space to rest, reflect, and focus on the next chapter.”
Franti cited a desire to spend more time with family, focus on mental wellness, and pursue other creative and philanthropic projects. “I’ll still be writing, just not on tour buses for a while,” he added with a smile.
The Welcome to the Family tour, which concludes in San Diego on October 12, will be their final run “for the foreseeable future.” Fans can still experience the band one last time during Soulshine at Sea 3, their signature music-and-wellness cruise sailing this November.
Longtime fans reacted with bittersweet messages online, expressing gratitude for the band’s uplifting catalog and hope for future reunions. “Michael Franti changed my life with his music,” wrote one fan on Instagram. “If this is goodbye, it’s with love and endless thanks.”
Despite the hiatus, Franti assured fans that the spirit of Spearhead will continue in new forms. “The music will always live on in each of us,” he said.
