Liverpool star has improved in key areas after difficult start, says pundit
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has been praised for his strong display in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal and for generally improving his game over the course of his time at Anfield.
The France international looked an exciting signing for the Reds when he first joined back in 2021, but it certainly seems like we’re only now seeing him play at his true potential, with Garth Crooks singling him out for praise in his latest column for BBC Sport.
Konate had to be at his best in a difficult game against Arsenal last week, with these two Premier League title challengers drawing 1-1 at Anfield in an even encounter that could’ve gone either way.
Crooks feels Konate has taken his game up a level and played a key role against the Gunners, particularly with a late challenge on Oleksandr Zinchenko that he couldn’t afford to get wrong.
Naming Konate in his team, Crooks said: “It has taken the Frenchman some time to settle down at Anfield and find some real consistency. Against Arsenal, however, the Liverpool central defender had the best game I have seen him have for some time.”
He added: “Konate also seems more composed on the ball these days and less prone to make rash tackles, especially when the striker has his back to goal.”
Liverpool fans will be delighted to see Konate growing into his role at the club as he’ll surely play an important part in replacing ageing stars like Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip in the years to come.

Klopp could ease Tsimikas blow by unleashing “lightning quick” Liverpool teen
The impressive youngster has featured in the first-team so far this season.
Liverpool return to action in the Premier League this evening as they travel away from Anfield to Turf Moor to take on Burnley on Boxing Day.
The Reds head into this match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Merseyside on Saturday and Jurgen Klopp will be forced to make at least one change to his starting XI.
Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is set to be out for a significant period of time after a collision with Bukayo Saka, and then Klopp, resulted in a broken collarbone for the Greek international.
With Andy Robertson also out until January at the earliest, Joe Gomez came on at left-back against the Gunners and put in a solid display.
However, Klopp could provide his team with balance down the left and ease this latest injury blow by boldly unleashing academy starlet Callum Scanlon from the start.
Tsimikas’ season in numbers
The unfortunate Tsimikas had been enjoying a strong run in the team in Robertson’s absence as he was producing solid displays on the left.
This season, the 27-year-old ace has started eight Premier League matches and contributed with three assists and two ‘big chances’ created.
He also made 2.5 tackles and interceptions combined and 4.3 ball recoveries per match across those eight outings for the Reds, which shows that the talented gem made an impact at both ends of the pitch.
Tsimikas is a naturally left-footed player who can provide width when he bombs forward, as evidenced by his three assists in eight starts, and Liverpool do not get that if they play a right-footed player out of position.
Therefore, Klopp could benefit from boldly unleashing Scanlon from the start for the first time this season in the top-flight, having been an unused substitute on two occasions.
Why Klopp should unleash Scanlon against Burnley
The 18-year-old whiz has already had first-team exposure this season with two appearances in the group stages of the Europa League.
He played 52 minutes in two games as a substitute and made an eye-catching five ball recoveries – 0.7 more than Tsimikas has averaged per match in the Premier League – to go along with a pass accuracy of 89%. This shows that he can handle the pressure of playing in a senior environment.
Scanlon, who one-on-one coach Jamie Atkins once lauded as “lightning quick”, could provide an attacking thrust down the left flank over the overlap to provide Darwin Nunez or Luis Diaz with a distraction to then cut inside onto their stronger foot.
His quality on the ball was on display in the Football League Trophy earlier this term with one goal and two chances created in two matches, to go along with 2.5 tackles and five ball recoveries per outing.
The Liverpool teenager, who has been capped eight times by England at U19 level, has showcased his defensive and offensive quality for the academy and first-team, which is why he could be ready to make his Premier League bow against Burnley.
Scanlon would be a natural left-back option for Klopp to use until Robertson is back next month and that would also allow Gomez to deputise at centre-back or right-back if needed, instead of being out of position on the left.
Chelsea make first move to sign “elite” new £69m star for Poch in January
The Blues have already turned their attention towards January reinforcements…
Chelsea have once again failed to find their feet in the Premier League after a disastrous campaign last time out. Under Mauricio Pochettino this time, the Blues would have been hoping to see the Argentine hit the ground running and take the club back into the Champions League. That has been anything but the case, however, with the London club sitting as low as 10th and as many as 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Having seemingly struggled in their recruitment during the summer transfer window, Chelsea could now turn to the January transfer window and that could see one particular target arrive.
Chelsea transfer news
Chelsea’s summer spending reportedly hit the €467m (£407m) mark during the summer transfer window, only to face similar struggles as last season. Their tactic of splashing the cash doesn’t look likely to come to an end anytime soon though, with the Blues eyeing a move to strengthen in the winter window. Speaking about potential arrivals, Pochettino has said:
“After the first half of the season, we need to check. That is the reality. If we are not receiving enough, maybe we need to do some movement. That is the thing to analyse with the sporting directors, to see if we can change this dynamic and improve in the second half of the season.
“We didn’t score [against Everton]. I think we dominated the game, we were the better side, but if you don’t score goals it is difficult to win the games. We were not aggressive enough in the last third. We need to be more aggressive. Then it’s a massive assessment and when the transfer window opens, we will see what we can do. I don’t say if I am going to ask for more or less players. It’s to see if the perception matches the reality. We are missing something. We need to improve our reality.”
With that said, according to Nizaar Kinsella of The Evening Standard, Chelsea have made contact with Sporting Club for Ousmane Diomande. The Blues have reportedly had their first enquiry knocked back, with Sporting insisting that they will only sell their defender for his full release clause of £69m. As Chelsea search for another centre-back, Diomande could certainly be one to keep an eye on.
“Elite” Diomande could be the solution for Chelsea
At just 20 years old, Diomande could already be the solution for Chelsea in the January transfer window, even at £69m. The Blues desperately need to improve if they are to qualify for a place in Europe this season. And given that the Sporting defender has earned such high praise during his time in Portugal, Pochettino could get the man to perform at the heart of his defence.
Among those who have had nothing but good things to say is Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, who posted on X:
“Ousmane Diomande. You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills. There are some tactical improvements but I’m quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world. The signs of elite talent.”
The Reds have been touted with an interest in the attacking midfielder this year.
Liverpool head into Christmas in second place in the Premier League after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday.
There is no hiding away from Mohamed Salah’s colossal efforts to pull the Reds into a title race as he has been Jurgen Klopp’s outstanding performer at the top end of the pitch once again.
With no Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane on the books anymore, the Egypt international is the only exceptional attacker in the squad when you consider his record in front of goal.
Klopp could finally land Salah another lethal partner in attack, as Mane and Firmino were, by swooping to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, who is a reported target for Liverpool ahead of 2024 – as per journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Mo Salah’s Premier League season in numbers
The 31-year-old superstar has been in phenomenal form so far this season and it was his brilliance, once again, that secured a point against the Gunners on Saturday with his sharp finish into the top corner.
That goal has taken Salah to 12 Premier League strikes for the 2023/24 campaign, which is a staggering eight more than any of his teammates have managed.
He has also registered seven top-flight assists, and that is two more than the next highest within the squad – Uruguay international Darwin Nunez on five.
These statistics show that no other Liverpool player has come close to Salah in terms of goal contributions as he has 19 direct
involvements. No other Reds player has more than Nunez’s nine (five goals and four assists) so far this season.
The statistics that show why Liverpool should sign Wirtz
Klopp could sign a lethal partner for the Egyptian superstar by securing a deal to sign Wirtz, who would cost at least €120m (£104m), from Bayer Leverkusen in 2024.
The 20-year-old prodigy has been in fantastic form in the Bundesliga so far this season and has the potential to be an outstanding attacker for Liverpool, as Salah is currently.
Wirtz has racked up five goals and seven assists in 15 league starts for his side. No Reds player has produced more assists and only Salah (19) has managed more direct goal involvements at league level.
The German magician has also plundered two goals and four assists in four Europa League outings for Leverkusen, whilst none of Klopp’s men assisted more than two goals during the group stage.
As you can see in the chart above, Wirtz also ranks highly among his positional peers in a host of key attacking metrics; including progressive passes, assists, and shot-creating actions over the last 365 days.
Talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as an “elite” wizard who is “too good” at different intervals and the statistics back that up, as he has been one of the best creators in Europe’s big five leagues.
Therefore, Klopp could land another outstanding attacking talent to come in and be a lethal partner for Salah in the final third, as opposed to his current options who have struggled to make a consistent impact at the top end of the pitch.
The Reds are reportedly interested in a move to sign the central midfielder.
Liverpool decided to overhaul their midfield options over the course of the summer transfer window as a host of players moved in and out of Anfield.
