Work on Liverpool’s Anfield Road stand is progressing, and the club hopes to open a portion of it when Manchester United visits Merseyside on December 17.
When Liverpool plays Manchester United next month, they plan to partially open the upper tier of their new Anfield Road stand.
The £80 million upgrade, which will increase Anfield’s capacity by 7,000 to 61,000, has been plagued by issues since the main contractor, Buckingham Group, declared bankruptcy. However, pending safety approval, it appears that half of the tier will be open to fans for the United game on December 17.
The rest of the stand won’t be ready until 2024, though the upper tier is expected to remain open for games against West Ham, Arsenal, and Newcastle later in the month if everything goes as planned on December 17.
The opening is subject to an internal emergency conditions test managed in collaboration with Liverpool City Council, as well as a public test event scheduled for the week before the United game. Before the upper tier can be officially opened and a safety certificate issued, approximately 3,000 people will be asked to test it.
When the entire stand is completed, Anfield will become the Premier League’s fourth-largest stadium, surpassing Manchester City’s 55,000-capacity Etihad Stadium and Arsenal’s 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium.
