Arsenal defender admits Martin Odegaard handball WAS penalty for Liverpool
Though both the referee and VAR were convinced Martin Odegaard’s handball did not warrant a penalty for Liverpool, one of his team-mates admitted it should.
Odegaard clearly handled the ball in the penalty area in the first half of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, but the foul was waved away.
The midfielder was adjudged to have slipped and attempt to balance himself with his hand in a natural movement, though instead he dribbled the ball like a basketball.
It denied a clear opportunity for Salah, who would have been through on goal had Odegaard not intervened, and it is certainly questionable whether it was natural.
But VAR David Coote saw fit to dismiss any penalty, choosing not to instruct referee Chris Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor for a second review.
Play went on and later Salah cancelled out Gabriel’s opener with a stunning finish, but Liverpool should have had a chance to equalise earlier on.
That was the opinion of Arsenal centre-back William Saliba, who laughed off a question from Norwegian broadcaster Viaplay.
“Yeah, of course!” he chuckled when asked if he thought it was a penalty.
“It was a penalty but I’m not the ref and they have to accept [it].”
It would be wrong to simply focus on the penalty decision, of course, particularly as Liverpool had a number of chances to take the lead in the second half.
A flurry of opportunities emerged soon after the break as a high press forced Arsenal defenders into mistakes, but the likes of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz were unable to finish.
In the end, the biggest chance fell to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who failed to find the back of the net when Salah passed to him in a five-on-one situation.
But Saliba’s admission that Liverpool did deserve a penalty is glaring, with it seemingly only the officials who felt it wasn’t a handball.
‘Absolutely sensational’… Gary Neville blown away by ‘incredible’ Liverpool player vs Arsenal
The former Manchester United defender was hugely impressed by the goal that Salah scored, but he also criticised Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko.
So, what did Gary Neville say about Liverpool’s goal against Arsenal in the first half? Let’s take a look.
Mohamed Salah scores superb goal in first half for Liverpool vs Arsenal
Well, Liverpool took on Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
It promised to be a hugely entertaining game between two sides aiming to win the title, and it did live up to expectations.
Mohamed Salah struggled to make an impact against Manchester United last weekend. One pundit said that it was one of the worst performances from the Egyptian forward.
Salah scored against West Ham United in the EFL Cup in midweek, and he found the back of the net against Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
It was a superb goal as well. It came in the 29th minute. The former Chelsea player got the better of Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko and found the back of the net with an unstoppable strike.
Gary Neville reacts
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was on co-commentary duty for the match on Sky Sports Premier League.
Neville was stunned by Salah’s strike and thought that it was “sensational” and “incredible”.
However, the Sky Sports pundit criticised Arsenal left-back Zinchenko for poor defending and thought that he made it easy for Salah to take the shot.
Neville said on Sky Sports Premier League (5:59 pm, December 23, 2023): “Absolutely sensational from Mo Salah. I did mention about 10, 15 minutes ago that Zinchenko against Salah was a mismatch.
“I mean, it’s poor defending from Zinchenko not to deal with that low pass to start with, but then that is really weak.
“To allow him to come back, a world class player like Salah onto his left foot so easily, you are asking for trouble. And my God, did he give him trouble! What a finish! The power is incredible.”
While Zinchenko should have done better, I believe that Salah has to be given credit for the goal.
We know how lethal he is with his left foot, and once again the forward showed that against Arsenal. He is a world-class forward and one of the best and most important players for Liverpool.
‘Exceptional’…BBC pundit blown away by how good £36m Liverpool player was v Arsenal tonight
Liverpool and Arsenal produced quite the game tonight at Anfield as they battled it out for superiority under the floodlights.
The Gunners got themselves an early lead when Gabriel scored within five minutes. However, Liverpool came roaring back and Mo Salah scored a fine equaliser to get Anfield rocking before half-time.
The second period was much of the same, as both teams looked to pinch a winner. In the end, the defences managed to come out on top, as the likes of Saliba and Van Dijk excelled.
But along with those two, former Liverpool defender and now BBC pundit Stephen Warnock felt it was Ibrahima Konate who really looked the part for Liverpool.
“Konate has been exceptional. He has engaged at the right moments and won the ball. Whether it’s Havertz in the middle or Saka or Martinelli on that far side,” Warnock said.
The French defender has been a mainstay for the Reds since he arrived for £36m in May 2021.
Konate key for Liverpool
The partnership with Virgil van Dijk is going to be massive for Liverpool this season. Konate has struggled with the odd injury since he arrived but it is clear that Jurgen Klopp wants to include him whenever he can.
Alongside Van Dijk, Konate is ensuring Liverpool have a solid platform to build on and tonight he showed that he can be so crucial for the Reds.
There were times in the game tonight where he simply ushered the Arsenal forwards out of the way and as Warnock says, he did so against different types of player as well.
Liverpool will be disappointed not to have got the three points here. But, there are big positives for the Reds to take and it seems like they are right in the title mix this season.
In the end, a point is still decent. And with Konate showing the sort of form he did tonight, then there’s enough here for Liverpool to be really encouraged.
