‘Let’s play a game’ – Liverpool supporters make same Man City point after controversial penalty
Liverpool have not had much luck regarding refereeing decisions in recent Premier League games.
Liverpool fans have been left frustrated by another contentious refereeing call, this time occurring in Everton’s meeting with Manchester City at Goodison Park.
City were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute of the match after a Nathan Ake shot inside the Everton box was deemed to have been handled by Amadou Onana.
Ake’s powerful effort, fired at goal from touching distance of Onana, left the Belgian midfielder little time or space to adjust his hands but referee John Brooks pointed to the spot. VAR chose not to overturn this decision due it not being a clear and obvious mistake.
Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the spot-kick and put his side 2-1 up in the match, Bernardo Silva adding a third late on to make sure of all three points for the visitors.
Liverpool fans watching along from home could not help but point out how City were awarded a penalty for this incident, yet Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was not penalised for an action that appeared a far clearer deliberate attempt to stop the ball with his hands.
Taking to social media, a number of supporters have voiced their anger at the continued lack of consistency from Premier League officials. Also sharing this opinion, ECHO columnist John Aldridge wrote on Boxing Day such calls could end up costing Liverpool the title come the end of the campaign.
