Destiny Udogie has revealed that he is now starting to settle into the inverted full-back role that he has been asked to play at Tottenham.

While there was plenty of excitement about Udogie before he linked with the Tottenham squad last summer, few would have expected him to have the impact he has had in his first Premier League season.

The Italian, who had exclusively played as a wing-back at Udinese, has been asked to invert and often receive the ball on the half turn in the middle of the park, a task that is not easy when one considers that he has also had to adapt to the pace and intensity English top-flight.

He has more than risen to the challenge, having arguably been the best left-back on show in the Premier League this season.

Destiny Udogie is still adapting to inverted role

Udogie has made a few errors, particularly in possession, which is only natural for a 21-year-old who is still learning the ropes, and the youngster has now admitted that he is starting to feel at home in his new role.

When asked about the change of position at Tottenham and the challenges he has faced in England, the former Udinese man told Gazzetta dello Sport: “But the way of defending that I learned in Italy is definitely helping me. I don’t know if it’s the perfect role for me, I’m not used to it. But I’m often there and I’m starting to settle in.”

Given the maturity that Udogie and Sarr have shown this season and their increasing importance to the side, it is sometimes easy to forget just how young they are. The pair are well on their way to developing into one of the best in the world in their respective positions.

He’s so complete’ – Destiny Udogie is in awe of former Tottenham defender

Destiny Udogie has admitted that he is a big fan of Manchester City star Kyle Walker, referring to the England star as a complete player.

It is fair to say that there are more than just a few similarities between Walker and Udogie, with the Italian, just like the City star, arriving at Tottenham at a young age and hitting the ground running at the club.

Like the 33-year-old, the former Udinese man is quite quick and extremely strong, often shrugging players off the ball with ease.

Udogie has also showcased his technical proficiency since arriving at Tottenham, with the youngster having to receive possession in the middle of the park regularly in the inverted full-back role in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Destiny Udogie is a keen admirer of Kyle Walker

Spurs fans will be hoping that like Walker, Udogie also does not end up leaving Tottenham to make the jump to a bigger club in the latter stages of his career, but the 21-year-old has made no secret of the fact that he idolises the City star.

On a segment about the best full-backs in Premier League history for Amazon Prime Sport’s TikTok page, the Tottenham star was asked to choose between Walker and Gary Neville and he responded: “I think Walker. He’s so complete, he has everything, I just like him as a player.”

While Udogie might not be as quick as Walker (hardly anyone is), he is potentially slightly better on the ball than the City star is. The Italian is still quite young and there is every chance that he will develop into as good a player as the 33-year-old if not even better.
