JUST NOW: Spurs and Ivan Rakitic prolong their contract negotiations. Spurs have a strong chance of signing a five-year deal.

Tottenham Hotspur have been in pursuit of Lucas Bergvall in recent days and it looks as though Spurs still have a chance of signing him.

On Tuesday, reports were doing the rounds suggesting Tottenham had all-but lost out to Barcelona in the race for the Djurgardens midfielder.

However, Swedish outlet Expressen has now reported that Bergvall is yet to choose his next destination.

Indeed, the newspaper claimed that, according to sources, speculation claiming the 17-year-old had already picked Barca is ‘completely wrong’.

According to the report, Bergvall is now set to pick between Tottenham and Barca, both of whom have offered ‘massive’ five-year contracts to the player.

Expressen also noted how Spurs have a potential ace up their sleeve in fellow Swede Dejan Kulusevski, who came through the ranks at Brommapojkarna just like Bergvall.

The entire package of bonuses means that the transfer fee can reach as much as 220 million Swedish krone, or around £16.7million, added the report.

Tottenham still in with a chance of signing Lucas Bergvall

While Barca still appear to be frontrunners in the race for Bergvall, it’s good to hear from a Swedish source that the race is not over yet.

Tottenham already beat one traditional football giant earlier this month when Radu Dragusin picked Spurs over Bayern Munich.

Now, let’s see whether Tottenham have done (or maybe can yet do) enough to tempt Bergvall to pick London over Barcelona.

Spurs would be getting a top talent in Bergvall. He is a player who Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout likened to Ivan Rakitic and Joey Veerman.

Kulig also described Bergvall as a player who’s “elegant on the ball with a silky touch” and gave him an 8.5 out of 10 rating with regards to his potential.

Let’s see what happens over the next day-and-a-half. Hopefully there’ll be a twist in the tale that benefits Tottenham at the expense of Barca.

£32m player is just ‘waiting’ to see if a club will move for him, after links with Tottenham

Although Daniel Levy has already been busy at Tottenham Hotspur this month, there’s a feeling that Spurs could strike again before the deadline.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have made commendable progress this month, shifting some of their old guard for new faces.

The swift departures of Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier shouldn’t be understated, moves that further indicate the change that is in store.

Radu Dragusin’s arrival proved the ambition Tottenham’s new project possesses, beating a giant like Bayern Munich to strike a deal.

However, Spurs do now seem a little frustrated in some moves they perhaps wanted to conclude.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher has been a long-standing target, but perhaps the club didn’t receive the encouragement they wanted.

And although things appeared to be moving swimmingly in pursuit of Club Brugge’s Antonio Nusa, Brentford stole the march.
