Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola issued a brutal response to one journalist’s follow-up question during his post-Brentford press conference on Tuesday.
The City boss was speaking after Erling Haaland’s 71st minute strike against Thomas Frank’s men ensured all three points and the perfect reaction to Saturday evening’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
Brentford offered a stern challenge for the Premier League champions, defending in numbers and counter-attacking to great effect, testing both City’s attacking and defensive credentials as they chase an unprecedented fourth successive top-flight crown.
Haaland’s single goal also silenced a lot of doubters and criticism over the past few days, having notably missed a number of golden opportunities to win Manchester City all three points against Chelsea at the weekend.
Speaking to the media after the game, Pep Guardiola stated – as part of an answer around Erling Haaland and never doubting the Manchester City forward’s goalscoring capabilities – that he would never be a journalist and does not want to be one.
As such, The Athletic’s Sam Lee later went on to quiz Guardiola on exactly what is wrong with being a journalist, to which the City boss responded in brutal fashion, “I’m a manager, my life is better than yours, so that’s why I want to be a manager and I don’t want to be a journalist.”
“The biggest compliments all the time are said to me, I would be against you, absolutely. It’s not personal, especially with you, Mr Lee!”
Erling Haaland is likely to retain his place as Manchester City’s starting striker over the coming weeks, with a number of high-profile matches on the horizon, beginning with a return to Premier League duties this weekend.
The champions travel to the south coast on Saturday evening as they take on Bournemouth in the Premier League, hoping to maintain the pace with title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal, with City now sitting just one point behind Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Rodri cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opening goal on Saturday evening, as Manchester City dropped points against Chelsea for the second time this season, having drawn 4-4 at Stamford Bridge in November.
Sterling opened the scoring in the 42nd minute after breaking free on the counter-attack, and it took until the 83rd minute for City to draw level, with Rodri thumping in his seventh goal of the season.
Manchester City registered 31 attempts in comparison to Chelsea’s nine, although just six were on target, as Erling Haaland missed a handful of opportunities.
The Blues’ poor defensive form also continued on Saturday, with City keeping just 11 clean sheets in 38 matches so far this season.
Liverpool and Arsenal both have a superior goal difference, and Guardiola’s side have conceded 26 Premier League goals already this season.
The defending was of concern to Rodri, who fumed at the team’s defensive showing after dropping points in the title race on Saturday evening.
“We want to win but we have to check ourselves and in the first-half with our defending we have to be stronger for the rest of the season,” said the Spaniard.
“It’s a point, a draw, of course we want to win and the way we performed second-half we deserved a bit more but when you defend like we did you can’t get more.
Manchester City will look to bounce back with a crucial game in hand against Brentford on Tuesday evening, prior to matches against Bournemouth, Luton Town and Manchester United.
