JUST NOW: Ex-player who left the Spurs in 2021 plans to retire by summer due to…

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Joe Hart has confirmed that he will hang up his gloves at the end of the season, Celtic have revealed on their official website.

Hart had a long and distinguished career in the Premier League, having featured for Manchester City, West Ham United and Burnley, before joining Spurs on a free transfer in 2020.

The shot-stopper, who won 75 caps for England during his career, primarily served as an understudy to Hugo Lloris during his one season at Tottenham.

The goalkeeper left Spurs to move to Celtic in 2021 and he admitted following his switch that then-Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo pushed him out of the door, bluntly telling him in his first meeting that he is not part of his plans (In The Stiffs Podcast via The Sun).

It was Ange Postecoglou who took Hart to Glasgow and he has had an extremely successful spell in Scotland, being a key part of the club’s historic treble last season.

Joe Hart is set to retire at the end of the season

The 36-year-old has now confirmed that this season will be his final one in the professional game, with Celtic manager Brendon Rodgers hailing the former Spurs man for an outstanding career.

Rodgers told The Bhoys’ official website: “For all he has done in football, Joe deserves huge praise and congratulations, he has been such a brilliant asset to Celtic of course and the wider game at the highest levels, domestically and internationally.

“But more than that, he is a tremendous man, just brilliant to work with, someone who I know has been a great team-mate to so many throughout his career and a player who never gives anything but his absolute best.

“Each and every day his work ethic is an example to all in football. I totally understand and respect Joe’s reasons for making this announcement and for being clear to the club and our fans on his future.

“I also know he will continue to work right through this season with the same intensity, commitment and drive which he has always been known for.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hart arrived at Tottenham in the twilight of his career and did not play much in his single season at N17, but he was a model professional and evidently a team man. Every single player and manager who has worked with the goalkeeper seems to hold him in high regard for his character.
