The storied former captain of Manchester City will face his former team when they visit Turf Moor for the opening match of the 2023–24 Premier League season.
Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany has warned that his Burnley team will be seeking to pick up from where they left off in the Championship as winners when the two sides meet for a ‘perfect’ Premier League curtain raiser.
Kompany is boss at the newly promoted Clarets and it was revealed this morning that Pep Guardiola’s City will be their first opponents of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. It will also be the first game of the new season overall, with the action kicking off at 8pm on Friday, August 11, in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
The Burnley has already taken on his former side and boss last season when the Clarets headed to the Etihad Stadium in an FA Cup quarter-final. However, City won 6-0 on that day as Kompany’s return to his former stomping ground did not end well for his team.
The clash at Turf Moor will be the first competitive game back for the Clarets since lifting the Championship trophy at the end of last season. They will host the Treble winners in an encounter which pits the victors of last season’s Premier League and Championship against each other.
And having cultivated a winning feeling at Turf Moor, Kompany has vowed that his side will be aiming to pick up where they left off last season when City come to visit. But he admits too that it is the ‘perfect curtain raiser’ to the new campaign.
Speaking to Burnley’s club website, Kompany said: “We all know every match this season is massive but for the reigning champions of the Championship to face the Premier League champions feels like the perfect curtain raiser!
“We aim to continue this season as we finished the last – doing everything we can to make our fans happy. It’s great we can start the Premier League campaign in front of our own fans with a home match.
“Burnley supporters helped make Turf Moor a fortress last season and we’ll look to them this season to continue that.”
