JUST NOW: Ange Postecoglou has decided to sign the Leeds star and has emphasized that “WE WILL GET HIM”.
Joe Rodon doesn’t have a future at Tottenham and will be available for a transfer in the summer, Paul Robinson predicts.
The Welsh defender has become a key man on loan at Leeds United in the Championship after making just 24 Spurs appearances since his arrival from Swansea four seasons ago.
Robinson believes Ange Postecoglou has made his decision on who fits in his squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and expects the 26-year-old to go the way of Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon as ones who don’t.
Although Rodon has been in excellent form in the second tier the BBC Sport pundit doesn’t expect it to have been enough to change the manager’s mind and has tipped Leeds to pull off a “great signing” if they can make the numbers work.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News Robinson said: “I don’t think he’s got a future at Tottenham no, hence the reason the manager’s let him go. He’s reshaping the squad, as with the likes of Dier and Reguilon and others that haven’t fitted into his side or system.
“He came in and gave players a chance, he had a look in pre-season so he had a good idea of what he wanted and what he didn’t want, and what type of players fitted into his squad.
“[Perhaps] Joe Rodon’s made him think or change his mind during the course of half a season so far, because of the levels of performance and quality that he’s produced at Leeds, but I highly doubt it.
“I think he’ll be available come the end of the season and I think it’d be a great signing if Leeds could pull it off.”
Joe Rodon has no way back at Tottenham after Leeds United loan
There was some suggestion that Postecoglou might have wanted Rodon back while he was navigating a personnel crisis in defence to end 2023 [Football London, 2 January], but the centre-back’s loan deal had no recall clause in it for January and a permanent switch to Elland Road seemed more likely.
Tottenham subsequently signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa for £26.7million [Sky Sports, 12 January], so look well covered with the Romanian joining Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
The ongoing disciplinary risk that the Argentine represents could see further movement in the centre of defence, but it appears Rodon won’t have a chance to force his way in.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou was too slow in the loss to Wolves to stop one player throwing the game away.
