Yorkshire Live takes a look at some of the titbits surrounding Sheffield Wednesday as they prepare for a
week-long training camp in Spain as they build towards their Championship return.
The fixture was made so as to give Xisco Munoz another chance to see his players get some valuable
minutes under their belts. It was played at Burnley’s training ground and saw Vincent Kompany’s men
run out comfortable winners with goals from Scott Twine, Josh Brownhill and Dara Costelloe.
The training exercise acted as the final piece of build-up for the Owls’ players before they boarded the
flight to Iberia this morning. Two further games will be played in Spain before run-outs back on home
soil against Doncaster and Luton round off their pre-season schedule.
Xisco makes fan pledge
Wednesday’s players are set for a rigorous week on the training ground out in Spain. Xisco Munoz has
now added to his coaching staff following Friday’s triple appointment and the new set-up will be putting
the squad through its paces in Murcia.
Munoz has said he is looking forward to seeing Wednesday fans, either those on holiday or expats, and he made a pledge to those supporters. He said: “One of the important things with the fans is to try to give what they need. When everybody’s sat in the stadium they need to see your team has values.
“You have to give your maximum, fight and give your best in every game. This for me is the minimum our team needs. At the end of the game everybody should be proud of your team. You can score, you can lose, but you have to be able to say you gave 100 per cent.”
Camara interest mooted
Wednesday have made just one summer signing so far and the pool of names linked with them has been
smaller than usual. The latest player mentioned is Ipswich midfielder Panutche Camara. He was only
signed a year ago for £500,000 from Plymouth Argyle but injuries and fierce competition for places
meant he made just a solitary league appearance for the Tractor Boys.
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna confirmed earlier this month that Camara has been made available for
loan and the Owls, according to BBC Radio Sheffield, are now said to be interested in the 26-year-old.
McKenna said on Camara: “We think as a football club it’s going to best for him to go on loan this season
and get minutes having missed the first half of last season with injuries and then found opportunities
limited in the second half with players coming in and doing well.”
Players will feel the heat
Pre-season is never an enjoyable time of year for players. Double and sometimes even triple sessions are
laid on and the schedules are packed with what seems like endless amounts of running.
It’s bad enough doing this in the relatively modest temperatures in the UK but Wednesday’s players
could be in for a sweltering time of it this coming week. The forecast for Murcia has the mercury hitting
the unbearable heights of 40 degrees on Tuesday – when the Owls are set to face Real Murcia in a bounce
match.
It could get even hotter the day after, with 43 degrees a possibility on Wednesday. What effect that has
on Xisco Munoz’s training plans remains to be seen.
