The Sheffield Wednesday departure of Darren Moore has the Owls searching for a new manager, while Carlos Carvalhal is now unemployed.
Prior to the 2023–24 season, Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri is searching for Moore’s replacement. The Star is informed that the possibility of Carvalhal returning to the club has been brought up.
The former Swansea City manager from Portugal left his position at Celta Vigo this month to pursue other opportunities. It’s likely that he feels he still has unfinished business at Hillsborough after twice leading them to the Championship Playoffs during his previous tenure.
Carvalhal managed the Owls for 131 games, winning 56 and losing 38. He led the team to the play-off final in 2016 and the semifinals in 2017, but a challenging 2017/18 season forced him to resign on Christmas Eve.
Now, with Wednesday on the hunt for Moore’s successor, it would appear that Carvalhal’s name is in the hat for a potential second stint at Hillsborough as Chansiri considers his options, though it remains to be seen at this point whether things will move beyond that.
The ex-Braga man is currently the bookies’ favourite for the now free position that’s come up at Wednesday, though there are now of course other names being bandied about as people wait to see who will take on the challenge of keeping the club’s momentum going after two seasons of continued improvement under Moore’s watch.
“Hope I’m wrong” – Outgoing Sheffield Wednesday man expresses concern at Darren Moore exit
The 49-year-old was confirmed to be leaving Hillsborough after nearly two-and-a-half years in the role and just three weeks on from a remarkable Wembley win that secured promotion back to the Championship.
Social media posts from a number of current players have paid tribute to Moore’s efforts in turning the club around in his reign.
And now goalkeeper David Stockdale, already announced as a player leaving the club at the end of the month when his contract runs out, has suggested he feels Moore’s departure is a missed opportunity to build on the success of the promotion campaign.
The veteran stopper was a popular figure both in the changing room and on the terraces and has since announced a switch to York City to take up a role both as a player and head of recruitment.
He wrote: “Well I thought a perfect time for stability and growth after last season… but…. Guess not. #swfc I hope I’m wrong. Thanks for memories I won’t forget Darren.”
And as Sheffield Wednesday’s website was quickly updated to reflect the exit of Darren Moore and his closest coaching staff last night, it showed the bare bones of what the club are working with as players prepare for a return to training at the end of the month.
Moore, Jamie Smith, Jimmy Shan, Simon Ireland and Adriano Basso were all removed from the site’s ‘first team staff’ list.
It is fairly routine for a manager’s staff to follow them out of the door in the event of a parting of ways – as was the case in the departures of recent Owls managers from Carlos Carvalhal to Tony Pulis.
Head of Sports Science Rob Lee worked with Moore at Doncaster Rovers and was brought to Wednesday in October 2021 as the club sought to make strides in the fitness department after a historic battle against soft-tissue injury problems.
It’s possible this is an oversight of course but with players set to return to Middlewood Road for pre-season training at the end of this month, his will be a key role in the programme.
Whether Moore’s replacement would seek to bring in a replacement remains to be seen.
