Celtics: NBA confirms crucial officiating mistake in Hornets loss

The NBA confirmed that the clock operator made a severe blunder during the Boston Celtics’ recent loss to the Hornets.

With an overwhelming 121-118 overtime road loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night, Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics fell to 11-3 on the early 2023–24 NBA season.

Despite his mostly virtuoso performance that saw Tatum score 45 points, the Celtics were denied a chance to tie the game late in the overtime period when he missed a free throw.

With just a few seconds left, the Hornets advanced the lead to three points after grabbing the rebound and being fouled twice.

There was only one issue, though: there ought to have been a lot more time remaining on the clock.

According to Taylor Snow, the NBA confirmed on Tuesday in its Last Two Minutes report that Jrue Holiday should have been called for a foul with 5.2 seconds left after Tatum missed the free throw.

There were actually 3.2 seconds remaining when the call was placed, and even after that, 1.5 more seconds passed before the clock was finally stopped, leaving 1.7 seconds remaining.

In other words, there should have been 3.2 more seconds for the Celtics to work with than what they had.

On their last gasp attempt, the Celtics had a pass intended for Jaylen Brown picked off by the Hornets’ Miles Bridges, ending the game.

While 11-3 certainly is not a bad record (in fact, it’s actually the best in the NBA), the Celtics know the importance of collecting every win possible in order to set up home court advantage in the playoffs, and they certainly let an opportunity to do that slip away on Monday, made more frustrating by the egregious officiating mistake.

Former Celtics big man has huge game with new team

While Daniel Theis is barely into his tenure with the Clippers, the former Celtics big man has already made an impact for his new team.

In just his second game with Los Angeles, Theis broke out in the Clippers’ 124-99 win over the Spurs on Monday.

Theis finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists, shooting 8-for-10 from the field in his 21 minutes.

That was the most points Theis has scored in a game since April 7, 2022, when he put up 22 points against the Bucks when he was still a member of the Celtics.

Theis, 31, signed with the Clippers for the rest of the season after he agreed to a buyout with the Pacers.

He was vocal to MassLive’s Brian Robb about his frustration with the lack of playing time in Indiana as he looked for a larger role elsewhere.

The Clippers were more than happy to sign the big man as they needed depth after Mason Plumlee was sidelined months due to a knee injury.

The Clippers have started the season slow, but they are now 2-0 in the Theis era, beating the Rockets and Spurs.
Los Angeles is now 5-7 on the season. Theis played well Monday and showed some chemistry with Russell Westbrook, who recently asked to come off the bench to give the struggling Clippers a spark.

Theis was a fan favorite during his time with the Celtics in both stints. He developed into a starter for the Celtics before he was traded to the Bulls at the 2021 trade deadline.

After signing with the Rockets, Theis was reacquired by the Celtics at the 2022 trade deadline in the Dennis Schroder deal.

He was ultimately moved from Boston to Indiana as salary filler in the Malcolm Brogdon trade.

Theis will hit free agency next summer, so he’s looking for at least one more payday during his NBA career.

He wasn’t getting any minutes with the Pacers, so this stint with the Clippers will at least give him a chance to show his worth. It was only one game Monday, but that was a positive step for the big man.
