Since joining Liverpool from Fulham in 2019, the 20-year-old has established himself as a regular, appearing in 80 games across all competitions.
And, as a lifelong Liverpool fan, the England U21 international is uniquely placed to discuss the emotions he experiences whenever he dons the famous red jersey.
Harvey Elliott has stated that he is ‘loving every minute’ of being a part of Jürgen Klopp’s ambitious Liverpool squad this season.
Elliott told 90min.com, “It’s more happiness and excitement than pressure.” When the opportunity arose and I learned that there was interest in me, it was one of those where I wanted to grab it with both hands and make the most of it.
“I’m enjoying every minute of it.” When you step on the pitch, you have to do your job, but when I come off it, I’m still the happiest kid in the world because I’m playing for Liverpool.
“It’s a win-win situation. I couldn’t ask for anything more than to be doing what I enjoy, playing football.”
Elliott joined Liverpool as a 16-year-old after spending most of his youth career at Fulham as a winger, but he has since thrived in a midfield role under Klopp.
“I wouldn’t say it was difficult because I had complete confidence and support from the manager and coaching staff,” he said of the position change.
“Obviously, it’s a new position for me, so it’s just figuring out where I need to be positionally, but football-wise, it’s just playing the game.” It’s why you’re a team player and excel at your sport. It’s just a matter of making sure I play both sides of the game.
“I feel like last year especially, I learned a lot throughout the season and I feel like I’ve taken it into this season and I feel a lot better and comfortable in those positions.”
“[Since] the first day I walked through the door, he always kind of took me under his wing and would tell me things I needed to improve on and put his arm around me if I’d done something well, and gave me many, many opportunities,” Elliott continued.
“I believe that is the type of manager and person he is. He wishes to provide that opportunity to everyone. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to seize those opportunities and remain a part of the team.”
Elliott will be looking to make another impression when Liverpool travels to Toulouse for their Europa League match on Thursday night.
He has started all three of the Reds’ group games this season and says the team’s ambition is high after a promising start to the season on all fronts.
“We’ve started very, very well this season,” he told reporters. “Obviously, the Europa League is another major competition, so we must concentrate on that.”
“We have the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, the Europa League, and hopefully the Premier League as well.” It’s not going to be easy, but as a team, I believe the energy is, ‘Let’s just go for it.'”
