Georgia has experienced an unusual beginning to its football season. Despite having only one loss to Alabama, the team seems to be struggling. They don’t appear to be the dominant force they were in previous years, which may be linked to a culture problem stemming from numerous arrests over the past two years.
This week, Georgia player Colbie Young was arrested and faces misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child, leading to his suspension from the game against Mississippi State. Although Georgia was expected to easily defeat Mississippi State, they allowed 31 points to one of the SEC’s weaker teams, winning by just 10.
During the game, Georgia’s head coach, Kirby Smart, controversially ran over and shoved Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. as he was heading out of bounds, despite Van Buren doing nothing to provoke such an action. This unusual behavior from a head coach has raised eyebrows, with one prominent college football commentator calling for Smart to be jailed for his actions.
College Football Podcast Host Wants Kirby Smart Jailed
Brandon Walker, a Mississippi State fan and host of a college football show at Barstool Sports, expressed his outrage on social media, stating, “We’re one day later, and I’ve heard nothing on this. I want Kirby Smart jailed.” He further joked, “Or at the very least fined $250K, sent to my Venmo.”
While Walker may be exaggerating about wanting Smart jailed, there are serious concerns within the Georgia program, and many believe Smart should face a suspension for a game. No head coach should be allowed to run over and push an opposing player without cause, and it’s important for Smart to take accountability for his actions.
