Jurgen Klopp has overseen a massive overhaul of his Liverpool team over the last 18 months or so.
After being so successful with essentially the same group of players since 2017/18, things have begun to shift.
Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Divock Origi, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all left the club since the summer of 2022.
As Liverpool 2.0 takes shape, some exciting, youthful additions have taken their place. Legends of the future are already being created. However, among the new faces, some old ones remain.
However, according to rumors this week, one of those, Andy Robertson, may be on his way out.
First, according to reports in France yesterday, Liverpool is interested in signing Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri. Today, 90min reported that Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is being scouted. It’s not looking good for Robbo.
Liverpool is on the lookout for left-backs.
It must be stated that the connections to Ait-Nouri and Davies represent two very different things.
Even if Ait-Nouri is brought in, Robertson believes he will be the first choice. He’s been at Liverpool for six years, but the Scot won’t turn 30 until March.
Despite being out with an injury, Robertson doesn’t miss much time. In theory, his body is in excellent condition.
He doesn’t need to be replaced right away, and Ait-Nouri would never do that. He’s only 22 and has done well at Wolves but hasn’t set the world on fire. In many ways, he resembles Robertson before leaving Hull City for Liverpool.
The Algerian might need some time to settle into the role, but he’d be signed to replace the Scotland captain one way or another.
Davies, on the other hand, would be a straight swap. Again, it’s not like Robertson really needs to be replaced, but if a player like the Canadian becomes available, you have to try to get him.
At this point, the smart money appears to be on the 23-year-old joining Real Madrid. However, if Liverpool were to make a move, Robertson’s position would be jeopardized.
In any case, the reports indicate that Robbo’s time is running out. All of the great Reds players will be replaced eventually, and each one will be more painful than the last. There’s no indication that Andy is being replaced or anything, but Klopp may be realizing that there must be life after Robbo.
