The Egyptian was the subject of a £150 million transfer offer from the Saudi Pro League a few months ago, and while the Reds refused it (The Guardian), the likelihood is that the Middle East’s wealthiest clubs will try to sign him again in 2024.
Former Liverpool FC striker Rosenthal believes the 31-year-old will leave the club next year and believes it would be a wise decision for the Merseysiders to cash in.
The former Israel player said: “I expect Mo will go to Saudi and I believe it makes sense to sell when a big offer comes in, with just under two years remaining on his contract at the age of 31.”
“[Darwin] Nunez was a good signing; he definitely has what it takes to score goals consistently,” the 60-year-old believes of Salah’s teammates.
“It’s difficult to adjust to your first season in England, but you could tell he was dangerous with his speed and strength.” He was a player I watched before he joined Benfica and you could tell he was going to be a great player.”
When comparing the goal outputs of the two Liverpool attackers, Nunez has been slightly more efficient than Salah.
According to Transfermarkt, the Uruguayan has seven goals in 675 minutes on the pitch (one every 96.43 minutes), while the Egyptian has ten goals in 1,038 minutes (one every 103.8 minutes).
If the 31-year-old leaves, the Reds’ number 9 appears capable of stepping up to become the team’s primary goal-scorer, though Klopp would still require a right winger to replace Salah in the starting lineup.
Also, Liverpool cannot afford to be in a position where the Egypt legend is sold and not replaced, and Nunez suffers a long-term injury.
Even with the Uruguayan striker now at Anfield, Liverpool must ensure that they bring in a like-for-like successor to their iconic number 11 of nearly the same quality before sanctioning the departure of their fifth-highest goalscorer of all time.
