Frustrated Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reacted after his team’s unbeaten Premier League record was shattered by a VAR-assisted Newcastle winner.
The Gunners were defeated by an Anthony Gordon goal for the Mappies at St James’ Park on Saturday evening in the north east.
However, in the build-up to Gordon’s winner, the ball appeared to cross the touchline, which VAR failed to rule out.
“I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team,” Arteta told Match of the Day. There are numerous reasons why the outcome should not be what it is.
“If there was a team hoping to win today, it was Arsenal.”
“It’s embarrassing what happened, how this goal stands, in the Premier League, which we say is the best in the world.” I’ve been in this country for 20 years and I’m embarrassed. It’s a travesty, and there’s far too much at stake. Every week, we strive to do incredible things and perform at the highest level. When we aren’t good enough, I raise my hands and accept responsibility.
“The outcome is nowhere near the level that this league requires, and the way that this league is being competed in.” It is insufficient. “I’m embarrassed to be a part of this.”
Before the former Everton attacker bundled the ball over the line, there appeared to be a foul on Arsenal defender Gabriel.
To add insult to injury, many in red and white insisted that the strike should have been called off.
