Weghorst’s future is uncertain because clubs like Everton and Galatasaray were mentioned earlier in the
window.
However, the Dutchman now appears to have intimated in a video sent to the club’s social media
accounts that he might stay in East Lancashire.
When asked what he was most anticipating, he only replied, “To succeed at Burnley.”
Weghorst transferred from German club Wolfsburg to the Clarets in January 2022 for a rumored £12
million sum.
The towering striker scored twice in 20 appearances at Turf Moor as the club was relegated to the
Championship.
He joined Turkish side Besiktas on loan the following summer – a move he felt was necessary to make
the Netherlands squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup, Weghorst explained: “I had my thoughts about it before I moved to
Burnley half-a-year ago. The World Cup is coming up and that’s a really important thing for me.
“It’s my biggest dream, I think it’s the highest you can achieve as a professional football player.
“We have a trainer who has clear thoughts on playing at the highest level so he’s really strict about it. If I
wanted to be there I had to make a decision.”
The 30-year-old was included in Louis van Gaal’s squad and scored a brace against eventual winners
Argentina in the quarter-final.
After the tournament, his loan in Turkey was cut short so he could head to Manchester United for the
remainder of the season.
Weghorst played 31 times for Erik ten Hag’s side, scoring against Nottingham Forest and Real Betis in
the Carabao Cup and Europa League respectively.
The forward’s last game for United was the FA Cup final against Manchester City on June 3. He also
played against Croatia and Italy in the Nations League last month.
