Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool just left FSG with clear transfer task after surprising 26 pundits

Despite Sunday’s disappointment against Manchester United, Liverpool has a clear opportunity before it, and FSG must give Jürgen Klopp the tools to seize it.

For Liverpool, this may be one of those moments where you need to take a step back, and place everything in perspective. Yes, the goalless draw against Manchester United was clearly a setback in the title race, but equally, nobody really expected the Reds to be in this position at this stage of the season. If they beat Arsenal at Anfield next weekend, they will almost certainly be top of the Premier League at Christmas.

The initial focus for 2023/24 was getting back into the Champions League after Liverpool missed out for the first time since 2015/16 last year. That prompted a summer overhaul that saw veterans like Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho leave and relatively young players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister replace them. The general rule is that significant upheaval doesn’t lend itself to short-term success, instead boosting long-term prospects.

That may explain why, of the 27 BBC pundits asked to make their predictions before the season started, only one — Shay Given — had Liverpool as high as it is now (second), and only 11 had the Reds in the top three. 10 more had Jürgen Klopp’s side fourth, and six reckoned it would miss out on the top four altogether.

Liverpool, then, is ahead of the anticipated schedule. It remains a flawed team, that much is clear, but it is nonetheless going to enter 2024 very much in the title frame. And that puts the onus on FSG.

There are two ways the ownership could look at the club’s situation heading into the January transfer window. The first is that Klopp is already right there with the squad he has available, so he must have the tools to compete. At the very least, he should guide Liverpool back into the lucrative Champions League with relative comfort.

The second is that this is an unexpected opportunity to win the Premier League, and they should make the most of it by making the funds available for a major transfer addition, whether that’s a specialist number six who can help Liverpool produce more controlled performances, or a center-back who can fill out the ranks after Joël Matip’s season-ending injury (it’s unlikely to be both).

After Liverpool offered what was a club-record $139m (£110m/€128m) transfer fee for Moisés Caicedo in the summer, we have to assume from the outside that the money is there for a significant addition, even if it may not be arbitrary as one budget for the season. We’ve seen marquee arrivals in the last two winter windows, first Luis Díaz and then Cody Gakpo, and there needs to be another here.

This could be the month where Liverpool pulls off some game-changing business, or squanders its chance and allows its rivals to steal a march. Indeed, it’s very possible that Arsenal, Manchester City, and even Aston Villa will take steps to strengthen next month. This regime has often been criticized for resting on its laurels and forcing Klopp to punch above his weight, and this may be a defining moment.

Liverpool want to sign €70M midfielder in January after talks with agent

Liverpool made contact with the agent of Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha in early December and are now competing with Premier League rivals for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp’s need for a top class defensive midfielder is well publicised in spite of his side’s impressive defensive record in the Premier League.

The Reds were unable to manage a win over Manchester United, succumbing to a 0-0 draw at Anfield, however, with just 15 league goals conceded in 2023/24, no side has conceded fewer.

Yet, having a natural defensive midfielder in the starting lineup remains a hindrance to Klopp’s tactics.

After TEAMtalk reported at the start of December that Liverpool are one of the sides to have “held conversations” with Palhinha’s agent, Record in Portugal report the Reds are competing with five other clubs to sign him.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have long since been interested but Manchester City are also reportedly interested.

While playing for Pep Guardiola may be enticing for Palhinha, he would face the same fate as Kalvin Phillips if he moved to the Etihad.

Rodri, widely regarded as the best defensive midfielder in the world, is simply too good to be displaced by Palhinha.

At Liverpool, however, the Portugal international would be an undisputed starter and could even help guide them to the Premier League title.

Signing the 28-year-old would cost around €70 million (£60.2m) but would greatly enhance their title credentials.

Dropping two points against Manchester United allowed Arsenal to climb to the top of the table but with the Gunners visiting Anfield on the weekend, Klopp’s men have the chance to ensure they enjoy Christmas as league leaders.
