Jamie Carragher says Liverpool simply had no choice but to spend huge money to sign Moises Caicedo.
The Reds have agreed a record £110m fee with Brighton for the Ecuadorian, who is set to undergo a medical today.
And having been vocal about Liverpool’s need to bring in a player like Caicedo, Carragher took to Twitter to express his delight this morning.
“110M is a big price for Caicedo but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate,” he said.
“But signing two top young players for 145M & selling two of your older players for 52M is great business!”
Carragher gets what he asked for
It’s always good to hear from Carragher on Liverpool matters. It’s clear that the Scouser is happy with the business his old club are conducting.
It was just earlier in the week that Carragher name-checked Caicedo as the player Liverpool should be targeting.
Gary Neville also took a similar standpoint, claiming that Reds owners FSG have to back Jurgen Klopp by shelling out for Caicedo.
Low and behold, just days later and Liverpool stand on the verge of completing a huge and unlikely deal.
As Carra points out – as will a lot of people – it’s a huge amount of money to pay. But given the shape they’d got themselves in, Liverpool had no choice but to fork
out this summer.
The unexpected sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have no doubt helped to facilitate that in more ways than one. Whilst obviously providing a cash injection,
their departures have also opened the door in the team for someone like Caicedo.
Pressure will now be on the young Ecuador international to fulfil his price-tag. But the Liverpool fan base will give him the time he needs to do that. For now, it’s
time to sit back and enjoy the final stages of the deal.
